Hey All,

I have got a 160L tank which have had fish in for just under 3 weeks. I have recently noticed a white growth on the glass it looks like some sought of bacteria. I cleaned it off today and since then the fish have been laying on the bottom and not swimming around much. They were fine before.

Any suggestions what this white growth is? I have searched the net and all I could find what info about white worms and it's not this. I work in a laboratory and it almost looks like coliform growth?

Please help!!

I have 4 angels, 2 sharks, 2 rainbows, 2 gouramis and 2 bronze catfish in the tank.

Cheers

Did you cycle the tank before you added fish? See the pinned article if you do not know what I mean. Do you have a liquid test kit so you can tell us ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH?

I had theis white stuff in my tank when it was cycling/getting established. I just scrapped the side of the aquarium and cleaning my decorations. It never hurt my fish and eventually it just went away.

Maybe someone else can help more...

I didn't cycle tank before fish went in. pH 7.0 Ammonia: 0.03mg/L Nitrite: 1.6mg/L Nitrate: 0.90mg/L

I didn't think scraping the white growth off would hurt the fish either but they are slowly recovering.

Oh boy, you have a LOT of fish in the tank if it is not cycled. My guess is that it is not the white growth on your tank hurting the fish. It is probably the fact that you have ammonia and nitrite because the tank is not cycled. You will need to do water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite below .25 ppm. I would also recommend using Prime as your declorinator. Prime will help with the ammonia and nitrite. Good Luck

seconded. water changes are the key right now i think

I wouldnt say he/she has a lot of fish, sharks i would definately say will out grow that tank, if it was mine I wolud rehome 2 of the Angels and the sharks and get 3 corys. If you keep them all just keep on top your water changes and make sure the water quality is good. Even better use the amount of stock you have got to persuade your other half to buy you a larger tank I have done this three times now and its great but even though I get bigger tanks I learn a little more each time and i always stick to stocking limits. If the fish are staying around the bottom of the tank this could be a problem with your water stats, check you levels of Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. :good:
