Awhile ago we saw a white growth on a platy of mine, I posted a thread on it but didn't get much help and it eventually died. One of the Julii corys in the tank also got a spot and he died as well shortly after the platy. My synodontis catfish has had the spot on his fin for awhile now but I guess hes got a better immune system because hes not showing any signs of distress but I would like to get it cured. I've added meds for numerous parasites and fungus and it still hasn't gone away, hes separated in a quarantine tank for now so I can focus on it more but still stumped. I have some aquarium salt I can add to the water, but I'm curious about it because it says it doesn't evaporate so wouldn't adding more salt after a water change make the water have more salinity and cause issues with the fish?

Is it a fluffy white spot? I cant tell on your syno from the picture but it sounds likea fungus and you should maybe start antifungal treatment? If its not a cottony type spot, it sounds bacterial

That ragged white/grey edge to the pectoral fin suggests fin rot to me, I would treat it with Myxazin or Esha 2000. Synos are often amazingly hardy and will pull through from states of illnesses far beyond the average hobby fish.

Your syno looks to be a hybrid with some S. decora parentage, the non-Rift Valley lake synos are generally as tolerant to salt as the ones from Tanganyika or Malawi. I treated a nasty bout of Ich last February mainly using Protozin, but I also raised the salt level to 0.5g/l over two days. You might be able to raise that a little further given you have isolated the syno, to perhaps 0.75g/l on a third day and even 1g/l on a fourth, but I would be reluctant to raise salt to levels like 3g/l.

As well as raising the salt levels by 0.25g/l while looking for any signs of stress, it is important to gradually reduce the salt levels steadily as well, with no more than a 50% water change per day after treatment.

It was sold to me as a Jaguar Hybrid, one of the guys ( I believe the fish stock manager ) of the LFS told me what he believed the parents were for the hybrid process but he wasn't 100% sure, nor do I remember the scientific names he mentioned. It could be fin rot, I've been dosing the tank he was originally in with API Pimafix and Melafix, as well as Kordon Ich Attack which is supposed to treat other infections for about a week and saw nothing.

Right now he's alone in the 10 gallon tank so I'll add some salt and watch him. The only part that makes me think it might not be finrot is that the first one I spotted on my platy was on his scales near his tail, but still on his body. I have the API aquarium salt and it mentions 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, should I follow that or use your weight/liter ratio? Im not sure what 1tbls of salt weighs atm

A rough teaspoon is far less accurate than a weight used by borrowing the kitchen cooking scales. ;)

The meds you have used would not touch finrot as far as I'm aware, you need a broad spectrum anti-bacterial, I swear on Esha 2000 and Myxazin.

I'll need to look for it around here, the stores are mostly garbage when it comes to meds or really expensive, I can order some online but takes a few days. I'll look at my LFS online store and find one of the meds you talk about and see if the larger store in town has some

Edit: Looking it up, I cant find any in North America atm, is it some Euro only med? My fish store chain only has Pimafix and Melafix for bacteria/fungus infections. Here is the URL for their online store if you can find something that works for finrot:

Any ideas on Fin rot meds I can find in Canada, or North America at least? Adding some salt to the QT right now, first time ever doing a salt treatment hopefully it doesnt stress him much
