shoudl i just take the wood out and give it a wipe down or what?

i am worried it mite be affecting the fish.

I've had that happen as well. After some investigation, I believe it is where soft parts of the wood are rotting.

As far as I am aware, it doesn't do any harm, but I took it out of my tank, and haven't got around to doing anything with it yet. Plan to boil it for a couple of hours and then try again with it.

I went through this with the mopani wood I use. It is a form of fungus, and is harmless to the fish. If you take the wood out and clean it it will grow back again very quickly. It will stop growing altogether after a few weeks or a couple of months.

could he soak it in a bucket with an airstone for a while? (if you are concerned about the look in the tank that is :) ).

I had the same fungus grow on my driftwood soon after putting it in my tank.

A couple days after it started growing i introduced a pleco and 2 ottos into my tank and the fungus disappeared. They do love munching on the peice of wood so i would guess they may have had a hand in it's disappearance perhaps? -_-
