White dots on female's gills

From what you described it sounds like ich. Definantly up the temp to between 80-85*F and, i add a small amout of salt, but if you want to use medication you may do so for those that treat ich. BettaMax, i think, is suggested widely on here.

Can I use non-iodide salt? Also, I'm trying to disinfect a container. I haven't put any fish in yet because I'm afraid. What I did was fill half the container with very hot water, added vinegar and lots of non-iodide salt. I let it sit for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly then fill all the way with very hot water, sit 10 minutes, rinse, and filled it up again. I did that process 3x.

I think the tank should be dissinfected by now. As for the salt, i use salt desinged specificaly for aquariums, it can be purchased in LFS. Usualy it's sold in a small version of a milk container.

If they are irridecent or corrospond to her colours then they might just be colouring, but if you say tiny white "dots" that makes me think ich. A new female i bought has ich, i'll see if i can get a picture up for you to compare to.

I find my bettas, both male a female, get pale dots on their "cheeks" (outter flap thingie to gills) under two conditions: About to get ill, or horny. Whenever my female starts filling up with eggs and getting her "breeding stripes," the spots appear, and usually my males get them when they are constructing bubble nests. However, I've also had a betta display them right before a major illness. But, if your girl is acting fine and if the "dots" look to more be directly on the flesh as a pigment and not as granules, she might just be seeking a boyfriend, not getting Ich. The fact that they are coming and going makes me think its not Ich, but could you send a pic or describe them more thoroughly?

My digital camera isnt that good so it can't take a good picture. You won't see the white dots. Anyways, both females are FAT loaded with eggs. Maybe they're not ill. I'm going to change the water now and tomrrow move them into a bigger container after it's been disinfected. I'll put in nox-ich tomrrow.

Are they glossy looking and lying flat to the skin/scales, or are they raised and looking like salt granules? Most fish with Ich I've had look just like someone sprinkled them with salt, whereas the cheek spots on breeding fish look like pale, glossy spots in the skin pigment itself.

Mmm. If they're raised and salt-looking, that sounds more like Ich; good luck with treatment and I hope all goes well for your girls.

Here is one of my new girlies....
