Hi

After successful fishless cycling (blog on here somewhere) I got myself 6 White Cloud Minnows last week....sadly one of them never really looked happy and has since died. Not sure what was up with him - just seemed to hide away in the plants and was nowhere near as active as the other 5.

I 'lost' another one today and after a frantic search I finally found her underneath the Juwel filter - no idea how she got there as I had to shift gravel to create a path for her to get out! Was hoping I didn't have some disease in there that was slowly killing them off. She seems fine after her ordeal!

Anyway couple of questions came to mind as I was thinking how she could have 'died' when she looked fine!

My temp is around 76 / 77F which I know is high for minnows. At the moment though I can't seem to be able to get it down as the heater is off and even when I do a 33% water change it only comes down by 1 degree if that. I did 50% last week but again it only came down to 76F. Is that a problem since the UK summer is pretty short so its only going to be a month or so before it drops?!

Also I was at the LFS looking at frozen fish food to give the little guys a bit of a change from flake food and was told that they would struggle with anything other than baby brine shrimp? Seemed a bit strange to me but anyway I bought some baby shrimp and they loved them although I can't help thinking full size shrimp / daphnia would be well within their range?

Finally it seems I've now got 1 male to 4 females since the one that died was a male. Again is this a problem? I'm not planning on getting any more fish until mid-September (I'm on holiday part of the time)....

Sorry to lump all these three together but if anyone has any thoughts / advice it would be appreciated

Thanks

Phil

the fish will be fine in temporarily warmer weather - nothing to worry about.

My danios (very similar) would happily chomp daphnia - so I dont see why not

should not be a problem at all

How do you sex them?? I have 4 white cloud mountain minnows and didn't know there was a way to sex them?? I started out with more than 4 but after 2 got stuck in fake plants and died, I will NEVER use fake plants again!!

Mine eat bloodworm fine and love it!! Never had a problem.

it's unlikely that they got caught and died in the plants. It's more likely that they died for other reasons and their bodies came to rest there.

The males are slimmer than the females who have rounded bellies or so I'm told! My 1 male does look quite slimmer than the 4 females - he also displays to the females by fanning his fins....

I have a mixture of fake plants and live plants and they seem to equally enjoy both and as mentioned above I would doubt it was the plant that 'killed' them?
