Hi all, I've just noticed this white blob on one of my Molly's mouths, any ideas what it could be? I thought at first he'd got a tiny leaf or one of the catfish pellets in his mouth, but now I'm not so sure!
I reckon it can only have appeared in the last few hours as I fed them this morning and didn't see anything. As far as I can see, everyone else in the tank is fine.

Sorry the photos are a bit blurry, let me know if you need clearer ones!

It looks like a foreign object from those pictures rather than a growth but I can’t be sure. Is It definitely attached? Does it have its mouth open in that last pic?

I think it's attached since he's still got it now a couple hours after I first noticed. He did have his mouth open in that bottom pic, but he can close his mouth fine! It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all, I was just worried in case it was infectious or something. It's not fuzzy or anything, and there's no other white spots on him or any other fish, so I'm hoping that won't be the case.

I managed to get a clearer video of him to see where it is. I'm wondering if it could maybe be a little blister or something? He does have a habit of pecking at the driftwood I have in the tank, I'm wondering if he might've just grazed his lip and caused it to form?

Whatever it is, it’s perfectly spherical like something has ballooned up on the lip. It might be an injury but I’m not sure. Is he still able to eat? It does look like it’s bothering him the way he keeps opening his mouth.
Hopefully someone else might have a better insight.

I've just put a few flakes in to see and he went straight up for the food as normal. He did seem to be having a bit of trouble with bigger flakes and was spitting bits out, but from the looks of it he did eat some of the smaller ones.

I agree it might be bothering him with how he's opening his mouth. In himself though he seems absolutely fine, swimming round as normal. The only changes I've made are adding a few more fish a couple days ago, and I added a bag of seachem purigen to the filter this morning.

No growth or fungus. Something got stuck in its mouth...

It's hard to see since the pic/videos are a bit blurry, but I've just had a closer look and the round bit looks slightly clear with some white blobs at the bottom closer to the lip. I'm not sure if it is something he's got stuck as I can't think of anything in the tank that would look like that.

I'll keep an eye on him this evening/tomorrow and update if anything changes! Really hoping it's nothing serious/contagious as everything's gone smoothly so far, and I'd hate for a load of fish to get sick :(

Just a quick update on the molly - last night I separated him from the others just in case it was some sort of disease. The bump seemed to have shrunk a bit last night, and this morning it's completely gone! He's back in the tank with the others and fully back to normal :)

Another update, I've just checked and he's now got these white marks on his body? These definitely weren't there when I put him back in the tank this morning, and weren't there yesterday either. Can't see any marks on any of the others.

Any ideas? They don't look raised at all, more like it's his scales that have changed.

I did wonder, however none of the others seem to be affected and I think the bubble may have been a cory egg he got stuck in his mouth 😂

I'm going to keep an eye out and make sure none of the others shows any signs. The mark on his back has faded quite a bit overnight, and the little dot by his fin has gone completely. He's still eating and swimming about fine, too.

If it was columnaris, what would be the best treatment? I was debating whether to get some to have on hand just in case I need it; even if it's not columnaris this time it can't hurt to have some for an emergency! I'm in the UK, so any treatments I can get here or order online would be ideal.

If the white patches on the fish are clearing up, then that is a good sign. I would wait and see if he gets better on his own. His immune system seems to be working. Columnaris is horrible bacteria. Most fish's immune systems can fend it off.

Since you live in the UK, I dont know what is available to treat columnaris, but others here on this site do.

In the states, people treat columnaris with Seachem Kanaplex and Metroplex antibiotics. I have had luck treating my fish internally for colunaris with Kanaplex mixed with their food.

I’m in the UK, good brands to treat columnaris are Waterlife Myxazin (I have this one on standby just in case):

Or Interpet Anti fungus and finrot.

Some good info about columnaris here just for your information:

The meds we have available are quite mild compared to the antibiotics available in other countries. They are worth trying but may not work if the infection has progressed badly.

Thanks for all your help guys :) I've ordered some of the Waterlife Myxazin to have on standby in case I have any issues!

The line on his back is still there, but almost faded completely now. I've not seen anything on the others, or any more patches on the molly, so fingers crossed it's not columnaris. I'm still in the process of stocking the tank, so I'll hold off adding anything else atm just to be safe!
