Whisper In Tank Filter

My kids have talked me into letting them have a tank in their room. I didn't want to go crazy. So I found a 5 gallon plastic tank (brightly colored ) kit, it comes with an whisper in tank filter. I don't know anything about this type of filter, I use biowheel in my big tanks. I wanted to go with the the new marineland eclipes but the only purple one they has was 2 gallons.
So here are my questions, what do you think of this filter? Does it work well, are the cartridges easy to use?
Also what do you think stock wise? We were thinking a cute oscar ............. just kidding I thought tetreas and guppies or at least that size! So maybe 10 - 12 ish?
Also if you see any other problems that may be on its way let me know!!!

Ok I took a better look at this filter but I don't get it.... do you "cycle" your tank every time you change the cartridge? I didn't see where any sponge or wheel or anything stays in the fitler when you change to a new cartidge. Oh why couldn't marineland just make the bigger eclipes with coll kid color?

i like the filter becuase it mounts in your tank and does not hang on the side of your tank!

It does work well and if you do not put it directly up by your lid the cartridge slips out causes it to not work and the fish sometimes swim by it and then they might accidently get sucked in becuase the current becuase mine have done that a couple of times but they have been saved becuase they have been strong enough to swim out themselves!

Where did they get sucked up?? the in take is on the bottom. the area that they might be able to go into is water flowing into the tank.

I have a 55gal with a Whisper 40i as well as an UGF. So far (6 months now) I haven't had any problems with fish getting caught in there (my fish are larger then the intake vents) and I always keep the water 2" from the top so they don't jump in. I'm really pleased with the Whisper.
