Whisker Shrimp

a number of the lfs are selling shrimp called 'whisker shrimp'. they are white but not the same kind of white as ghost shrimp. and they are kind of big, 1.5" each or bigger i guess. some of the have one pincher longer/bigger than the other. anybody heard of such a thing? i might get some if i can fine some info on them.

sounds like some sort of Macrobrachium shrimp.

Definately a Macro if it has a larger claw.

Generally they need moderately hard, alkaline water, and many species are not tolerant of other males in their territory, but will accept females. They breed easily, but some may eat the babies. Temp can be from 70F-80F, I usually go for 72F.

ow do i tell the males from the females? and what does "moderately hard" mean? oh, and how big do they get cause it seems like i read somewhere that they can get to a foot in good conditions. thats way to big.

The stores around here have been selling this shrimp as well.

Males are larger, and have much bigger claws.

They should do well as long as the water isn't soft and acidic.

oh, and how big do they get cause it seems like i read somewhere that they can get to a foot in good conditions. thats way to big.

That'd depend on the species. Some get huge and will rip apart fish, others are small and peaceful. I'm not sure what species the Whisker Shrimp is.

wow, a shrimp that can rip a fish apart. thats insane. i think ill get one of those some day.
