Do you know which tetras will shoal tightly together, that are small and peacefull?
thanks :)

Neon tetras are very peaceful fish in general although shoaling fish like tetras will only shoal tightly together when they are stressed/feeling threatened or on the move if in a big tank so if they shoal 24/7 this isn't the best indication they feel safe in their surroundings.

As TP has said, shoaling/schooling is a defensive behaviour. In small crowded tanks, it is rarely seen. It is best observed in large tanks, with open spaces, and very low stocking levels. When the schooling fish venture into the open, they stick close together.

Cardinal r my fravoit. Because they beat neon in coloration also they r immunited to neon tetra disease. :) go cardinal. But ofcourse they r alot more expansive then neon tetra.

From all the tetras i have the rummy nose stick together the tightest, i have 9 and they follow each other every where. Another fish that stays small and sticks together are the harlequin rasbora. I have 7 of these which stay together with a pygmy rasbora following. (no where near me seems able to get any pygmys so she thinks shes a harlequin)

I agree with Emma.Ive got 7 rummy nose tetra who really stick closely together plus they are really peaceful although they are supposed to be very particular about water quality

For a few years I had a small school of rummy nose tetras, I believe I had 9. Anyhow, they were in a 35 gallon tank with some swordtails and corys and they swam in a real tight school all the time.

They are excellent fish and from what I remember they were a pretty decent price as far as tetras go.

My green neons (about 3/4 of an inch mature) stay tight and usually close or even w/in my diamond heads shoal. Very nice schoolers. They (the green neons and diamond heads) float around like a big cloud often. My lemons are next. They swim back and forth across my 60 inch tank in formation. Although since I took my hi-fin serpaes out everyone has relaxed a bit :flex:

I don't have any rummy nose.

Rummynose or the similar species Firemouth Tetras are fairly large when compared to neons. They are lovely fish and would be hardier than alot of other tetras.

If you want a shoaling fish that stick tightly together I would definately recommend cardinal tetras - they're not as bright as neons but to be honest they're amazing looking anyway!

Cardinals are smaller than neons so you could put a larger shoal without too much more " of fish.

IMC - I haven't noticed a price difference between neons and cardinals, if anything I would say neons are more expensive when I live.

Saying all that, make sure your tank is well established - advice on TFF suggests at least 6 months after the initial cycling and establishment of the tank and neons / cardinals should be fine - learn from my mistake!!!!
