You mentioned the cost of the filters, heaters, etc. Buy them on line. You will save in the neighborhood of 40 to 60 percent compared to the LFS or LPS. To give you an example, when I bought my Fluval 304s, they were $149 at Petsmart and I paid $89 plus shipping from Petsolutions.com. The difference is enough to pay for the heater and some plants.

Also, if you get an air pump, don't go for the cheapest one you find. I originally bought the el-cheapo and it was so noisy (even though it said "silent" on the box) that I took it back. The others of the same brand were the same (I took them out of the box at Petsmart and plugged them in). The employee suggested a Rena brand which was the most expensive they had but it was dead silent. I now own 4 of them.

i would go with the 4ft tank since it is the cheapest, and teh BIGGEST!! we started with a 11gal, then went up to 50 gal, and we are now buying a 170 gal... all in the space of one year.. is so adictive! at least if you start of with a bigger tank, you won't want an even bigger one quite so soon! :D

the best place to buy extras, i would say is ebay.. you can get some really good stuff, be it new or used, and it's a lot cheaper!! :p

good luck and enjoy!!

i thought about getting a tank off ebay. Saw a 6ft tank sell for 30 quid but it was for local pickup only :( if anyone is selling a large tand in the north east of scotland gimmi a buzz lol would be willing to travel a bit to get 1. I just got some books about keeping fish/aquariums and i read that the bigger than tank the easier it is to maintain... that true lol?
