Hi all - I'v been reading through the forum and decided it would be easier to ask you myself these few questions!
I have two tanks - a 180 litre which i have 6 discus in and also a 70 ltr which i had community fish in but have recently cleared it as i want to keep puffer/s. I would rather not have dwarf puffers - i would like something slightly bigger. The tank is sand based and is ready to go! Can you please give me some ideas on what i could go for? Ideally I would like 2 puffers.

Thanks for listening!

The next size of puffer would be the Fig 8. They are brackish. They will need 10 US gallons each. For more info check out The Puffer Forum.

You could get South Americans which get to be about 3 inches long. Take a look at the pinned thread on puffer species at the top. That has a lot of information in it.

I agree that South Americans are good suggestion. A little bigger than dwarfs and an extremely lively species always wanting to know what's going on outside the tank.

If you're looking for more unusual species, here's a few to look up.

Leopard puffer
Crested puffer
Red-tailed, Redeye puffer
Common/Emerald puffer
Brown puffer

Thanks for help guys - i shall let you know how i get on!!! I'll prob go for south american maybe get a pair -_-

I have no idea why you wouldn't want Dwarf Puffers, though...they're so much fun. I highly recommend them, but if you insist on something else, I guess go with some of the other recommendations.

One thing about South American Puffers, though, is that you have to manually trim their teeth once in a while (if I'm not mistaken). Just a warning, because I know I wouldn't want to find that out after buying one, or (even worse) after its teeth are overgrown.

Good luck!

I have a 20 gallon tank, and my situation was just like yours. I wanted a pair of the larger puffers however I could only find GSP's around here no figure 8's or SA's. I love the GSP's and will gladely upgrade them to a larger tank when they are bigger. Let us know what you end up with.
