Which Pleco?

i want 1 maybe 2 plecs, for a 33gal tank, they have to be 6 inch maximum, i want a fairly nice looking one, and one that eats most things, plus they cannot be really expensive, and they must be able to tolerate ph of 7.6(tapwater)


and 1 question, do all pleco's need bogwood to rasp on?

I would go for a bristlenose plec, they grow to about 15 cms long, they can also live for about 15 years!!!! They have really good personalities, Mine is black with white spots although he can change his colour, sometimes he looks like he has black and white patches. Bristlenose like all plecs grow quite rapidly, any other plecs and you would have to be thinking about buying a bigger tank in a couple of years time, as some can grow to just below half a metre!!!

How about a clown ple(L104) or a Leopard Frog Pleo (L134) or a butterfly pleco (L052) all stay under 6 inches i've just gotmyself 2 Clowb Plec's great little guys but these do require wood

I would go for a bristlenose plec, they grow to about 15 cms long, they can also live for about 15 years!!!! Some info is a little wrong lol, not all plecs are rapid growers most actaully grow very slow and mature very slow also... commons will be able to outgrow most tanks and can get to 18+ inches, most plecs will live 15years or over.

Bristlenose tend to be the most popular and easiest to care for becasue they are so readily availbale at very cheap prices but there are quite a few plec species that would suit a 33g tank, choice is basically yours.

have a look around and see what you like and then we can give you info about specific ones/species and whats required for the best care

"cheap" is a relative term

myself I'd consider £25-£30 "cheap"
Others might aim at £5 as cheap...

If I were you, Id have a look through the pinned topic and then tie the numbers / names up with the "cat-e-log" on planet catfish to get pictures etc...

in my opinion, from that list and not exceeding the £20 mark there is only one option, L134.

I have never seen Spectracanthicus as a common export and i find L134 a much more attrative fish and is more omnivorous diet wise.

not all plecs need wood no, certainly not the 2 i mention in this post, what are you going to use as decor, the plecs will need something to use as cover, wood is ideal for that.

Typed at the same time as Mike and I have to agree, the L134 is a lot prettier.
If they are true Leopard Frog Plecs then I'd snap them up as they seem incredibly cheap.

ok thanks guys, i thought it would be obvious, but i should have said, i am willing to go a couple of pounds over, so 21.99 is really the limit

for decor it will be coral sand/ or play sand with plenty of rocks, i will make sure there is atleast 1 slate cave burried under the rocks

would it be best to get 1 or 2 leopard frog plecs

no i want something larger, maybe even thinking that leopards are to small, at just over 4", i dunno, they probably wont even be on the stocklist in late summer after i have set it up,
