I am getting my new 55 gallon tank next week, but I have yet to figure out what type of substrate to get. I love sand, but I also have black gravel in my betta tanks. I dont know which to choose. What would look best? What are your oppinions? :)

Depends what fish you are planning on keeping, but i prefer normal natural(ish) looking mixed gravel....

sand def, you know you can get black sand thats pretty cool :)

My plan for fish has just begun. This is what I have so far.

2 Rams
1 bgk
1 bristlenosed pleco
1 angel fish
4 yoyo loaches

I prefer sand to gravel in a tank, but I really like the way a darker substrate brings out the colours of fish - so I second the vote for black sand :good:

I like normal gravel, but even better mixed in with soil!

I love the look of sand - but have never ventured there yet, as ive read that its hard to grow plants in, and is a ***** to clean.
An old mate of mine had black sand - looked increadable!

i like black sand personally

i know this isn't what the topics about, but just to mention it incase you don't know. the BGK will need a significantly bigger tank in time, they get around 24" long

Yes I have now realized this. I have crossed the bgk off my list.
And this black sand is starting to sound pretty cool. Where can you buy it?

Here is the stocking at the mo.

2 rams
2 angel fish
6 yoyo loaches
5 corydoras
1 bristle nosed pleco

If you are planning to have live plants at some stage then sand is no good as it compacts around the roots. Black gravel I feel is un-natural. You can get fine gravels these days and I would suggest you source these they come in a variety of natural shades.

You could always do a mix which looks fairly striking, a planted gravel area and a sand area...
I've seen tanks of black gravel with a light sand 'river' running through them, edged with large white pebbles, it looked stunning.
