Has to be the goldfish, though unfortunately there are other fish that aren't far behind.

Got to be Goldfish. All the other fish are tropicals and at least most people realise that these take a bit more work (even if they don't realise exactly what). But Goldfish are seen as an easy pet for children, one that can be put in a bowl and cleaned out once a week with totally new water. People think water condition is the height of treating them well.

I was one of them only a few months ago :(

I'd say Neons come a close second though coz they're so pretty and well known.

why red line torpedo barb???
same reason as galaxy rasboras. red tailed black sharks are extinct in the wild. red line torpedo barbs and galaxy rasboras could soon be the same

Bettas get my vote. Is relatively easy to convince people that goldfish don't belong in bowls while it is increasingly more difficult to convince folks that bettas require same care as all tropical fishes.
Too many folks continue to regurgitate untruths and also encourage others with same.

Goldfish for sure although i reckon pleco's aren't far behind...its amazing how many peeps buy a common plec when they're small in a small tank...

Ahhh that was a hard decision but I went with bettas because even stores put them in to small of tanks... and most of the time the bettas don't even get fed.

goldfish a VERY close second for as stated recently, goldfish bowl stereo type. And that also the myth that they only grow to the size of the tank.

third: oscars My neighbor across the street has one in a ten gallon
