Which "hobby" Forum Would This Be Appropriate For?

i was wanting to discuss my personal neuroses regarding body image/physical fitness, but it occurs to me that there may not be an appropriate hobby section for such a topic. in that vein of thought:

if i wanted to discuss my current state of physical fitness, would that be appropriate for "Sports"?
if i wanted to discuss my attitude towards correct eating/dietary choices, would that be appropriate for "cooking"?
if i wanted to discuss a general lack of physical confidence/low self-esteem... would that just be generally inappropriate for our forum? or "Sports" again?

i ask because i remember some of the topics which killed off general chat touched upon these same themes of insecurity and the potential role of society in the formation of one's self-image, although admittedly in a more severe and volatile fashion. thus i'm asking about the appropriateness of these smaller discussions with the awareness that the line must be drawn somewhere. although i would greatly enjoy hearing the opinions of my TFF family, i believe that i would find greater pleasure keeping the Hobby section alive for less potentially controversial conversations.

(i'll understand if this topic disappears shortly after posting ;) )

I would say it all fits under sports. You have the attitude aspect, the nutrition aspect, and the personal image/self confidence aspect, all of which are addressed in many sports. As long as it stays oriented towards a sport, and doesn't go off topic, I don't see it being a problem.

ah, but see it wouldn't be oriented towards any particular sport, unless "sit-ups" were to suddenly turn up in the Olympics. the more i think about it, the less likely it is that such a discussion would be considered appropriate within the current confines of the forum. unless "cooking" was expanded to include "nutrition" or "sports" was expanded to include "fitness", it doesn't seem like it would fit. and even then it might be a stretch.

this sort of limitation could very well be intentional, but i kinda want to see it in writing in that case  somewhere along the way, i turned into one of those people who has more virtual than real-life friends, especially when it comes to knowing other women. thus i personally would find it very comforting to discuss these sorts of hang-ups here at TFF.

i would like to again emphasize that i recognize the potential for abuse and that allowing one type of navel-gazing (pardon the pun) would open the door to other topics with greater potential for controversy. but, "hope springs eternal" and i thought that it couldn't hurt to at least ask first.

Nutrition has a direct tie to cooking, as well as sports. Physical fitness obviously has a tie to most any sport.

Both of those would tie in with martial arts, there are so many different systems out there you could probably tie in almost anything, especially the mental aspect.

Hi pica_nuttalli :)

I see what you are asking for, but please understand our position here. While what you suggest is reasonable, it can easily get out of control. This is what we had happen before and it led to the demise of the old General Talk section.

Perhaps if I sum it up by saying that we are trying to avoid "drama" it might make our position more clear. You can see how your reasonable suggestions could easily get off into areas that are too personal and make some of the other members uncomfortable. I think that as long as a topic stays general and theoretical, and avoids a too personal level, it's OK to discuss.

Let me try to answer your questions in a way that might help the discussion so we can get some other member's opinions and I'll raise the matter for further discussion among the other mods.

As it stands, why not start a general interest thread about physical fitness in the sports section and see if there is any interest in discussing the subject in a general way. IMHO, it's very closely related to organized sports and perhaps you might even make friends through the topic that you could discuss your more personal concerns with.

I think dietary choices and nutrition are good topics for the cooking section since it involves food. However, I will warn everyone right now that if it comes to a bashing contest between vegetarians and carnivores, I'll personally put a stop to it. We have been there, done that, and aren't going to let that happen again. Period.

I think your third question is just too intimate for the forum as it is now. I wish it didn't have to be this way, but there has to be a limit somewhere. We are just not qualified to deal with some of the matters that arise out of this kind of sharing. Some people have serious problems and frankly, we've been frightened by some of the things our members said.

Thanks for bringing these touchy subjects up in such a thoughtful and appropriate way. :D

your response is exactly as i expected. i just wanted to verify my impressions before ( a ) posting a lockable topic or ( b ) unnecessarily censoring myself. thank you for the timely response.
