I have a problem!
I'm new and I'm trying to figure out which fish to use and no book or site will tell me which ones work together well.
I'm so confused :S
Below are several different kinds of fish that I read about and I think I would like keeping. Can anyone suggest which ones would work well together
note:* means ones I especially like! :D

*Angelfish
*Mollies
Platies
Tetras
Sword tails
*Gourami
Dainos
Plecostomus catfish
*Oscars
*rainbow and/or redtail sharks
siamese fighting fish (I think these have to be solitary right?)

If you have any other suggestions for other types please tell me! I'd be grateful for any response.

Thanks Again :D :D :D

Sorry
My tank is a 50 gallon
height: 15 inches
width: 12
length:36
thank you ;)

Go to www.fishprofiles.com. Look under forums....then go to compatibility...you'll be able to look up what fish goes with what.
Male bettas usually do best alone.
Oscars are out of the question with the other fish you listed. They are a very aggressive fish and can also get quite large. If you decide to go with oscars, you'll probably want a tank with nothing but oscars.
I don't personally know about the rainbow sharks, but everything else you have listed are pretty peaceful fish. I have 2 dwarf gouramis, and they bother noone. They keep entirely to themself. Sounds like you may be interested in a general "community" tank.
There's a lot more out there then what you listed.
Keep looking up different sights. You'll find plenty at the sight above. There are pictures galore.
Keep asking questions...it's the only way you learn! Good luck :D

A betta can go in a community, but not with fish that remind him of male bettas -- i.e. fancy tail guppies, long-fin danios, etc. There are other threads that address the question of betta compatibility. Just do a search. But tmlhaus is right that the short answer is to keep them alone

Good advice about the Oscars, too. Other fish are food for Oscars.

Angelfish could work nicely in your tank. You could build the community around them if you like. They get fair-sized, so you'll want their tankmates to be a little bigger, too. I'm not sure how compatible they are with mollies, but some nice black mollies would look really cool in a tank with marble angels. Again, you'd have to look into the compatibility. I read elsewhere that mollies can be kept with most types of angels, but not the "blushing" variety.

I guess you could have a plec in a 50 gallon, but they do get large. I'd get something smaller, myself, to leave room for the angels. One of the less readily available, but smaller species, like the clown, gold nugget or zebra plecostomus might be better than the common ones you've probably seen. They are prettier, too.

If you want a shark, I would just get one. It will bicker with other sharks. Give it a proper territory in the lower part of the tank. The plec will be its only rival for that space, unless you add other bottom dwellers. It will grow fast and thrive, I should think.

Wrap it up with a small group of gouramis or a school of 6 to 8 tetras (but be careful not to choose on of the fin nipping types, like red minors or buenos aires.) Congo tetras are large, for tetras, so they might be a good choice with angels, if your water suits them. Here is a link:Congo Tetras
It seems as if all the fish you like the best are compatible and suitable for a 50 gallon tank. :kana: What are the odds? Usually people want fish that are totally wrong for each other and for the tank. How lucky for you! :hyper:

Have fun working out the details. Just remember to add the fish slowly, let the bacteria catch up (tank is cycled, right?) with each addition, and it is probably best to start with the least territorial and work toward the most territorial of the fishes.

Unless the fish are all very small when you buy them, I would try to space it out over about 6 months, as difficult as that sounds. That way you will gradually build up a healthy and mature environment for them and reduce the risk of losing any to stress and disease.

Best of luck to you!

I love my rainbow shark but he can be a jerk to the other fish, except the angels, those he doesnt mess with.

First off, according to the dimensions your tank is 30 gallons. This makes an Oscar impossible. The 15" height is not the best for Angels either, but you can get away with it.

The common pleco gets really large, but there are many pleco's that don't - just make sure you buy a suitable type. The Common Pleco is not one of these.

You can pretty much keep any of the other fish on your list as you want. Just keep the species behaviors in mind (keep schooling fish in numbers, solitary fish as singles, etc) and avoid overstocking the tank.

Good luck

thank you all o much for your advice it's helped me out SSSSSOOOOOOOOO much!
:D :D :D :D
