Searching Lake Ontario for tropical fish...No luck
Here is the criteria:

1. Commonly given to ppl with improper inhabitants

2. Commonly given to ppl with improper tank size

3. Kept in improper tank (Saltwater, Freshwater, Brackish, Pond),then sold to someone who thinks it is in the right settings

4. Sold only for money, even tho LFS knows that they wont survive in the tanks of those whom they are selling it to.

EDIT- By clowns I mean SW Clownfish, not Clown Loaches

The most common has to be goldfish. People put them in bowls, when they actually need a minimum of 10-20gallons each.

Bala sharks and common plecs have to be a close second but I think goldfish are more commonly mistreated.

The life span for a goldfish is 36+ years but the average is only 1. :(

I went with 'feeder goldfish' but I mean just goldfish, there wasn't a pet goldfish option though.

i think piranha or oscars becuase alot of people buy them to watch them eat the dont take care of them

Hard to not pick betta when they're the only ones sold in cups of inch-deep dirty water and end up living in little half-gallon bowls...

Only fish I have experience with though... I may learn about all sorts of other horrors here.

even tho i voted for the betta, after what cheese specialist (yum cheese :p ) said i wanna vote for the gold fish too because i totally agree with that

Cheese Specialist:

Got to be the feeder goldies, luckily we dont have them here in the UK but from what i hear from the peeps stateside a feeders lot isnt much of a life. They are bred for the soul purpous of being fed to another fish, they are kept in cramped over crowded tanks and are fed barely enough to keep them alive, often they are riddled with diseases and are left to die rather than being treated.

i voted for oscar because ihaveseen many people that have bought them put them in a small 20 gallon tank an with in a few mouth has grown to twice or three times as big.

I voted for betta, even though there has been extensive psychological profiling and counselling for the species, and 'experts' have decided they are agorophobic, I'm not easily convinced.

Agrophobic bettas

How do they cope in the wild?!

I have to agree that the betta is the most taken for granted, mistreated fish. :-( It's their darn hardiness :X

I also agree with Cheese, goldies, balas and common plecs because theyre cheap and popular, readily available at your local Wally World waiting to stock your new 10 gallon kit :X :X :X After seeing a full grown Pacu, then seeing them as juvenilles for sale in Wal-Mart....they should probably be on the list too :/

Feeder Goldfish, they are kept in dirty water, and are usually overcrowded at my Pets Mart
