i have a small tropical fish tank 25 litre (http://www.petsathome.com/shop/fluval-chi-aquarium-set-25l-%28available-in-store-only%29-78653) and the filter that comes with it is poor i think.

is there an internal filter that anyone can suggest please? i have seen this: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/i25-internal-filter-by-marina-83213

any help would be appreciated, i just dont think the filter is powerful enough that came with it. i have 4 plattys in it at the moment i put an air stone in it and they love it but am having to do a water change every couple of days as the water just isnt right the LFS said. both nitrate and nitrite if i have that correct is high which puzzles them as they said its usually one or the other.

all the fish are fine, no signs of damage infection etc and they are whizzin up and down the bubbles, but i really fink the filter isnt good enough

any suggestions very very welcomed here and i am new to this and have a bigger tank which i'm setting up currently

That tank is really not big enough for the platys or any remotely reasonable stocking (in terms of length and surface area), so since you have a bigger tank, I recommend that you just move the fish and the filter media into the bigger tank and be done with it.

Even if you got a more powerful filter, the tank would still be too small for any more stock or for fish as large as platys, but if you really are determined to replace the filter, then the Fluvals are usually quite good. The Elite Mini filter is great for small tanks, but I think it has been discontinued, so your best bet may be to get a second hand one.

As long as you move all the media from the existing filter to the new filter, you should not have any problems at all, but it will still be worth keeping a close eye on water parameters for the next few weeks.

Before moving, make sure that the temperatures are the same in both tanks and that it is stable in the new tank.

If the water parameters (hardness and pH) differ, then drip acclimatise.

I don't know the ex1200 details off the top of my head, but as long as it is rated for the tank, then it will be great.

Edit: the 25 litre will make an excellent shrimp tank as it is now, I can just imagine it with some mosses and bogwood.
