Looking to upgrade my Aqua One CF 1200 external filter to some thing a bit easier to maintain as i find it a nuisance to get going again! Been looking at the Fluval G3 are these any good or is their anything in the Eheim range that would be suitable. Is it better to have a high pump output or not? My tank is 220 litres Any advice welcome before i order one :good:

must admit i have seen a demo
of the new G series and was very
impressed and its silent as well
mind you i also like the new eheim
as well two very very good filters
both get a :good: from me

I am a die hard Eheim fan. I am currently in love with the 3/3e series, but the classic series is also good and reliable. I have heard not so great things about the ones with inbuilt heaters (they're pointless), but the rest of the filters, I have never heard a bad thing about! Basically any of the Eheims rated for your tank will do. I usually prefer to buy a larger, rather than smaller filter.

very expensive but a reasonable filter. thing like "£50" off. indicate its not selling well. not surprising really, it does nothing more than other filters, yet cost more than "really" good filters like an Eheim.

give it a miss, unless you think of the filter as a bit of decorative art. it does look pretty.

Think i am going to get the Eheim Professional 3e 350 filter as they are a bit cheaper than the Fluval G3 and do almost the same. Does anyone have one of these and are they easy to maintain?

Ooh, get the 3e 450! I am running those of those on two of my 200 litre tanks and they fits very nicely.. + I think they are cheaper than the 350?

Was thinking of going up to the next size the 3e 450! My tank is 220 litre and has big fish in it. what are they like as filters and do you get the filter media with them as need to see if it comes within my budget :D

The media is not included. Only the pre-filter sponge and post-filter sponge come with the filter. It is actually very important to have the top basket quite full as the post-filter sponge will fall apart if it isn't full. Regardless of the hype, the pre-filter works VERY well. I have run the filters for 3+ months without them needing a proper clean (where I clean the pre-filter, sponge and basket, on a weekly basis).

Because of the adjustable flow rate, it works well for smaller tanks too, although now that my fish are used to the considerably stronger flow rate compared to the previous filter, I have been turning up the flow from 1 (min) to 6 (max). The "cleaning" indicator is very accurate for "time to clean the whole filter" thing, but cleaning the pre-filter delays this.

The three baskets took about 6 litres of media in total. Because the flow is bottom to top, I have the following arrangement (from bottom up):
* lowest basket: 1ltr bio-balls and 1ltr smooth noodles
* middle basket: 1ltr porous noodles and 1ltr porous balls
* top basket: 2ltr porous balls (covered with the post-filter fine sponge)
I have tried a few different arrangements of media so far and this one is working best for me, although I dare say, there are infinite number of combinations you can try!

The cheapest I paid for the filter was €230, which is about £200. Do haggle, I used to work for an LFS so know that even at that we'd make a good profit!

BTW, it is officially the quietest filter I have ever come across  and oh yes, it does come with the pipes and fittings, just not the media..

And possibly my favourite feature is that it takes an polarised C7 connector for the transformer/power supply. This is very useful for me given that I move house and country moderately often (5 house moves in the last 5 years).

The only problem I did have was that the first 3e I bought was mis-assembled so that I needed to get a Torx T7 screwdriver to take the top apart and move the connector socket into place. This was not fun as I was installing the filter at 11pm while the old filter was breaking on me. I ended up having to stuff the media into some of the other filters and leaving the tank filter-less over night. Meh. At least since installing that one and getting a few more, all have worked flawlessly.

I am going to go in an entirely different direction than others here have done. I like the Rena XP series of filters and would get either an XP2 or an XP3 for a tank that size. The XP3 would be a bit of overkill but would require far less frequent cleaning than an XP2 would. The XP2 is what I have running on a tank about that size but it needs attention every 2 months which is more often than I like to clean a filter.
A side benefit of the Rena series is that they come with some media. I bought some extra ceramic media with my first one because I really did not want to use their choice of a largely carbon type media.

Have ordered a Eheim Pro 3e 350 as my budget wouldnt stretch to the 450 as it dosnt come with media. Should arrive tomorrow

How much was it? I am only asking as I have only ever seen the 350 for about £50-100 more than the 450..

Those are much better prices than I've generally seen! But ayah, where did you find such expensive media?! Hope you like the filter as much as I do :)
