It will be fine in a 50 gallon, theres nothing that can happen, you could put it on a 20 gallon if you wanted to, the only problem would be if the output was like 4000lph and be like a wasking machine, 1000lph is nothing, use a spraybar at the surface and it will be fairly gentle output.
The eheim will be a better quality filter - better quality materials, quieter, larger capacity, easier to use etc
Eheim do a classic range with no push to prime, I picked up the largest one, a 2217 with 7 litre capacity for £20 2nd hand to use on a 40 gallon tank, its not as easy to use as the newer proffesionals but It does the job.
So to sum up if you want an excellent filter that will last forever and is easy to use buy the new eheim but obvious its not cheap, if you want a quality filter that will do the same job but isnt as user friendly then buy a 2nd hand 2215 or 2217 off ebay
