Just a curiosity thread, but which do you think are your most intelligent or stupid fish and why? You don't have to list all the fish you have which you think have the best brains or not, but i'm interested in your reasons why you think certain fish of yours are particularly intelligent or stupid, especially if you have stories or example to tell?

I would that some of my most intelligent fish are my guppys, for the reasons below;

a. When i used to have more male guppys with my female guppys, when i sat down and watched them in the tank for ages i would notice that there are definately some males that are a lot more popular with the females in general than other males. Some of the males which didn't seem to get a lot of action in with the ladies would try to use certain tactics to get a sneaky mating in with the females.
For example, some of the males seemed to realise that it was often a fruitless venture trying to chase the females around trying to either impress them or just mate with them. But some of the males seemed to realise that during feeding sessions when i fed my fish, the female guppys would be too obsessed with food to concentrate on the males. So some of the males would often try to mate as much as posible with the females only while they were concentrating on food.
b. In my all-male guppy tank where i keep lots of hillstream loaches in, i often supliment their fresh algae diet with TetraPro vegetable flakes by sticking the flakes just above the water level where the hillstream loaches come to nibble on them. The guppys eventually realised that i do this on a regular basis, and so have figured out that if they splash the glass above the water level where i stick the fish flakes for the hillstream loaches every night, they can splash the flakes off the glass and into the water for them to eat.

I think that my hillstream loaches are also very intelligent too in their own way. I only started giving them fish flakes as treats when one day i noticed one of the hillstream loaches nibbling on a couple of fish flakes that had accidentally got stuck just above the water line on the glass/side of the tank. Ever since then, i have always put some fish flakes out for them almost every night (they have lots of algae growing in the tank to eat as well, but they seem to really like the fish flakes too), but i don't think they are just eating them by chance. They seemed to have noticed that everytime before i start plastering fish flakes to the side of the tank, i clean and wet the glass first by swishing and rubbing some water on the glass first so the flakes stick to it. Everytime i do this now the hillstream loaches quickly come to the front of the tank and wait patiently stuck to the glass for me to put the fish flakes out for them.
I think they must be intelligent because of this because it takes at least some brains to connect that me swishing the water in the tank on the glass equals/means that i'm putting food out for them.

I think one of most least intelligent fish has to be my RTBS (red tailed black shark), (no offence to him, he's a really nice fish, but doesn't seem to think things through much like the guppys and loaches etc). Every night and day i put algae wafers or catfish pellets out for him and the pleco's in the tank. He's not a very agressive fish, but can get quite short tempered with the platys and guppys when they try to steal his food- he often goes off to try and chase one platy or guppy off his wafers, but this only ends up with more guppys and platys swarming around his food while he's trying to deal with one fish. If he spent less time chasing individual fish off, he'd probably get a lot more to eat  .

So how about you guys/girls- which fish do you own that you think have the most or least brains and why etc :) ?

Hmmmm, I would have to say the most intelligent would have to be my angelfish, especially when it comes to food. Or maybe they are just greedy little jerks, I don't know. But they are the only ones that take food from the surface in my tank, so when I sink flakes for my ram, cories, and neons they gobble that up as fast as they can before anyone can get to it, then they leisurely eat the flakes on top.
I used to have a 55 gallon cichlid tank and I was impressed by my oscar. He just seemed smart, recognized me, and was hand fed by me.

About stupidity, I would have to say my hatchetfish. I have to be extra watchful at feeding time. They have each jumped out of the tank at least twice, and I have to scoop them up while they are thrashing about in the carpet... It's like they have a death wish.

My most intelligent fish was my CAE (he went back to the LFS when I found out how nasty they become). The morning routine is to turn on the tank light light, wait a couple seconds while the fish go nuts, and then drop in the flake food. While the other fish are pre-occupied, I'd drop in an algea wafer which undoubedly would get caught in the filter current and land in the left corner of the tank. After a few weeks of this, the CAE would go straight to the left corner of the tank when the lights came on!

chiclids tend to be more inteligent. Bettas are not. Mine try's to get the food from the other bettas thru the glass partition. Don T.

I would definately say that my Oscars are the most intelligent fish that I own. They know the difference between me and other people and respond accordingly. They play "fetch" with me, I hold an orange toy up and wave it around to get Odin's attention, then throw it as he goes chasing after it and watches it fall to the floor. They follow my hands and seem to know the difference between food time and lovey-dovey time. This is where I tell them how pretty they, fawn over them in general, are and kiss them through the glass. (Yes I am a dork and I have lipstick marks all over the side of my tank!)
As far as my least intelligent fish, I would have to go with my serpae tetras. They mostly just hover around, show no distinct personalities, and probably don't know me from their heater! Pretty to look at but not the brightest.

THe smartest would have to be the cray, Charlie. She knows she'll get her food, and it'll be specially for her. The fish...well, their just stupid. You put food in the tank and they go nuts, no matter what it is. LOL

I'm going to try some cuccumber and zuccini soon...that should mess with the whole tank. LOL

My smartest fish have to be my kribs because whenever they breed and i move the barrel with the eggs in to another spot they dont seem to be botherd because they recognise me as their keeper and when i ask my dad or someone else to move it if i am busy they try to bite his hand to get him away.

My most stupid fish have to be my zebra danios as whenever i change a filter pad in the internal filter one of them always swims in and gets stuck... happens everytime and they never seem to remember not to go in there.

I know it's not a fish, but when feeding time comes, it's gotta be the shrimp in my tank that are first to the food, they'll swim to the surface and hang onto the floating plants and grab all the food they can hold as it floats past them, often before the fish notice they're being fed.

Though to be fair to the fish in the tank, in the last couple of weeks my gouramis have started rushing upto the surface as soon as I walk past the tank, and especially if I accidently knock or tap the hood of the tank, as I've always done this before feeding.

I have to disagree. I have a small hole drilled in my Bettas tank and they know when it's feeding time. As soon as I lift the lid, they sit under the hole waiting for their food.

mine r totally dumb , I put shrimp food on top of the surface and they wont come n get it, they would just wait until the current pulls down the food .. or r they smart but lazy

Well out of all my tetras I would have to say my Red eye tetras surprise me the most. Only after 2 weeks in the tank when they hear me open the lid which makes a creeking sound they swim to the top cause they know they are about to get fed. It doesn't matter where they are in the tank everytime they swim right to the top and wait.

 All of my fish do the same. Id say it's insticts rather then being smart. :/

My kribs are very smart. They know feeding time from watching time, and cleaning time. Every time they see the bucket I use to clean they both go and hide under this huge piece of slate. When they know I am watching them, they will go out and strut their stuff, and when it is feeding time, the male and female will each position themselves infront of each on of my 2 filters so when the food comes the filter will make it sink and it will push the food right in front of their faces so they dont have to chase it. My danios are the stupidest fish I have ever seen, they will jump into my filter, and then they will get themselves traped in their, i will take them out, and they will do it a gain. And they dont really have a personality.

Fish in my opinion, all have a very limited intelligence. A drive to eat, mate, and self preservation. They are all primitive in my opinion and all basically only can remember that humans mean food. But If I had to choose one, I'd say Angel Fish. They tend to stay with one mate their entire aqaurium lives as long as both are alive. They also seem to remember for longer periods, that people mean food. For example, if I go on vacation with an auto vacation feeder, I will come back and many fish will hide when they see me, until they get used to me again, but angels will always come to the surface when I'm near the tank.
