My old Pentax optio 50 camera finally busted up so its time for a new camera.

I just need a basic camera that takes decent pictures- nothing too special or fancy.

I checked out the local stores flyer for sales and they have either the Nikon Coolpix s220 or Sony Cybershot s950 on special.

Which would be better out of these two? Anyone have any experience with either and is able to reccomend??

Thanks

get down to your local camera shop and try them out, you might find one too fiddly or too small over the other.

after checking the specs, the Sony has 4x zoom over the Nikon's 3x zoom, and 230k dot screen resolution, as opposed to Nikon's 150k

But the Nikon takes SD cards, which seem to be alot more popular over the memory stick duo that the Sony takes. You might have a few SD cards knocking around already. The Nikon has a bigger internal memory too (44MB) than the Sony (12MB)

You brought up good points here, Thanks. I'm going on go for the Sony i think as a few people at work here have it and have said great things about it. Its also cheaper :)

I'm not sure about the memory stick duo, never heard of them. Are they any good? Would that still be able to fit into the slots in my laptop like the SD cards do?? One slot says SD and the other "Magic Gate"

Thanks again. :)

I would personally go for the nikon as they are camera specialists and sony are still coming into the market (Sony enthusiasts will shout me down lol). I use Nikon DSLR's and have used the coolpiks and think there awsome, its likely that you wil have more control of your settings, but if you want point and shoot then its up to you.

I love Sony. Sony laptop, Sony TV, now Sony camera. Never had any problems with them so we will see. I read some bad reviews about the Nikon coolpix s220 and photo lighting so that helped my desicion a bit.

I do just want a point n shoot. Thats all I need and anything too complicated won't be any good for me

Also the Nikon warrenty is only 1 year and since im buying the s950 from the 'Sony Store' im getting a 4 year warrenty for an extra $30.
