i awoke this morning to find snails in my tank! i guess they were on the plants i put in my tank 3 weeks ago? what do i do with them? will they harm anything in the tank? i have 3 young mollys.

thanks

They Shouldnt do any harm at all, I had them once in my tank, and they didnt do anything wrong at all, just cruise around the tank abit, and made babies in my filter box !

I have that much to my puffer's disgust as he cant get to them!!! Only a few so far though

Urgh @ snails, this is an ongoing 'battle' with my hubby, he doesn't mind them, I hate them with a passion and rightly or wrongly I scoop them out as soon as I see them and send them on flying lessons outside, they genuinley make me ill to look at them, possobly a phobia?

I was overrun with small snails and they were wrecking my plants. I bought 3 loaches and goodbye snails! My tank is big enough for the loaches when they reach full size. :)

Whether snails cause any trouble or not varies from fishkeeper to fishkeeper and even from tank to tank. I've not found it difficult to keep on top of mine, but some fishkeepers face a continual battle.

Basically, they are harmless little creature in themselves- they certainly can't hurt your mollies- but if there's too many of them, they become a nuisance. Like all animals they produce waste, and they can eat your plants. The best way to keep the population under control is not to overfeed, as they will reproduce in proportion to how much food they find. And you may want to scoop out the ones you find from time to time. I find I always catch a few unintentionally when I do my gravel vacs.

How I keep from getting snails is every time i buy a new plant for my tank I wash it off really good and i dont get snails. See Snails lay their eggs in the roots of plants. So you buy the plant take it home and the sanileggs hatch. But if you wash the eggs off before putting the plant in the tank you wont have any problems at all. Hope that cleared it up for you.
