I have to decided to give rare livebearers a try. I've done some research and found that the Eastern Mosquitofish is my best bet (aka Dwarf Mosquito Fish Heterandria formosa ) I've done my research on it and found it is native to where I live. So I thought I would just go catch some wild ones. The only problem is i've never noticed seeing that type of fish in the lakes/ponds around here ( could be i've seen it and wasn't looking for it so I didn't know that's what it was) I can't find any information on where I could find it in the state I live in. Any ideas on where to look for this fish? also I thought about ordering it but the only option is the western Mosquito Fish which is nonnative. I want to put theses in a pond behind my house and I read that western Mosquito Fish are invasive and mess up the lifestyle of other native fish. Thanks:)

I'm just going to offer a couple general comments.  First is to ensure you are legally allowed to capture this fish if it is native to your area.  You are wise to be concerned over fish that are not native to your area but that could become invasive, as these can do immense damage to the ecosystem; they also might be banned by the local state government.

As to sources for the fish, you might want to contact the American Livebearer Association.  They are on Facebook:

so you should be able to get in touch with someone.  I would imagine this organization has info on fish retailers.

Byron.
