I dont know where to start to look to get some pure ammonia, can you guys help please? I live in England, so if any one could recommend a shop/product I would be gratful! Thank you!!

You can get it at homebase, in a sort of small, white bottle that is rectangular and has a black and orange label. I think it just says "household ammonia".

Aquascaper reminded me to mention that I tested it out of the tank and my bottle at least was at around 9.5% too.

Noooo, go to your lfs, get some filter medium put it in your filter, it will save you weeks and weeks of work, i did mine in 2 weeks.....

Unfortunately not a lot of LFS will do that, you're very lucky yours does.

The point still stands though, if you can get hold of old established filter media then using will help you cycle your tank a lot faster. You will still need an ammonia source though.

Okay, thank you! I will be off to homebase tomorrow, and will also enquire about media at my lfs.

Make sure (if your LFS has media you can snaffle) to keep it wet whilst in transit, a normal fish bag with some of their tank water would be fine.

Yes I think you do need an ammonia source, in my case it was fish poop and slightly over feeding..... for a few days only.....

I bought mine from Robert Dyas a couple of weeks ago. Its called Home Care Essentials Ammonia, with a yellow and blue label ;).

And it's still the case that unless you get massive amounts of media given to you, you still need to finish cycling it. All it does is give you a head start.

When I was cycling, I asked my LFS for media. The guy just looked at me like I was asking what time the aliens are landing.

Oh I don't know, an ammonia test to see how much ammonia there is per unit volume in said pee, then dose accordingly ?
As ammonia levels in urea will change depending on your diet and therefore every time will have a different amount you would need to test every time. Not to mention it would contain any other contaminants that your body expels which you would not want in your tank.

All in all, easier and safer just to buy some cheap ammonia solution.

I'd rather pee in my tank (assuming we're talking fishless cycling here..) than dump any old ammonia type solution off the shelf of Wilko's or wherever.

But then again adding any kind of ammonia to the tank is just for those who're impatient.

I've had great success in the past when setting up new tanks by adding a small cube of cooked pork or chicken. The rate at which it gets consumed once you start to build up the media is startling!
