Petcetera, and most other chain stores. Big Al's is the exception (usually), but I still prefer shopping at my lfs.

I have to say that i definitely dislike petcetera...i have been to one and am scared of walking into another I was horrified with the "betta tanks" they were selling. They were a bunch of different neat shapes with nothing more than a gulp of water and some without enough room for the betta to turn around. I left very angry and have not had the courage to go back.

It's a local fish store that I hate! They're so over-priced and the fish aren't even healthy. The guppies are $9.97 and so un-healthy that somebody who knows nothing wouldn't even buy them!

EDIT: Oh, sorry! This was about bettas, not all fish in general! Anyways, it's the same with the bettas. They have veiltails that they're attempting to sell for about $8-$9.

5 of my bettas are petco, and are very healthy. (I only got them because they were cheaper, and needed rescue )

Actually petco is getting better. No they odnt have them in tanks, by i have seen them im MUCH bigger 'bowls' and have been taken goood care of. I have bought all my bettas from Petco, and have never had a betta die on me yet, *KNOCKS ON WOOD*

I hate buying my bettas at a lfs near my home. They are kept in these tiny container and do not look healthy at all, even the female get kept in these small containers I tried to tell the owners that you can keep females with other fish but they said "It's a male and it's very aggresive we can't keep it with other fish" ...man they can't even tell a female from a male! The bettas are not that expensive $ 8.75 each.
There is another place called Pets Parade wher they keep the bettas in even smaller containers All the other fish are either dying or dead The bettas there are a major ripoff... $18.00 -$16.00 each

I just want to add that my favourite place to buy bettas (and other fish) is called Vebas Aquariums, the owners is real nice and always looks after the fish. The bettas althought kept in slightly larger containers than the other two shops and healthy and are always flaring at each other. In this store the prices depend on the type of betta you want to buy. Crowntails $7.50 each. Veiltails $5.00 each. I havn't checked the other prices...
