Where do you get "fancy" betta's?

I was wondering where some of the betta owners here got their "fancier" looking betta's, with numerous different colors and finnage. The only LFS in my area is Petco and they only have those poor little betta's in the cups, and they're all either blue or red with the same finnage. I was just wondering where you guys got yours, and how much they cost.

Mine are from aquabid mostly and direct from breeders. I've paid anywhere from $8-$38 for a fish and then around $25-$40 for shipping. I know people also like bcbetta and bettatalk as well for their fish. Hope this helps! :)

thanks alot, AquaBid.com looks like a great place to buy fish...

but you said shipping was $25-$40, I'm looking around and it mostly seems to be around $5 per fish

That's where it gets tricky...The fish that say $5 I am assuming are from Thailand/Indonesia anywhere overseas, right? That $5 is to have the fish shipped to the U.S. where they arrive at a transhipper. Then you are charged by the transhipper to have them shipped to your house. That cost is usually between $25 and $30 depending on the transhipper and how many fish you purchase. ;)

shouldn't there be some kind of rule against that? i mean, they are supposed to tell you how much it costs for everything, aren't they??? seems like a damn rip if they don't give you full detail from the start.

ahh, i see. thanks for clearing that up. it's a lot more expensive then i thought it would be!

anyone live in the chicagoland area who breeds bettas and would be willing to sell (or give :D ) a betta to me? hehehe

Here's a quote from a random aquabid auction...

"Buyer pays overseas shipping costs of $6.00 per fish. Payment by money order sent to US address must be received within 7 days after auction closed. Inland shipping and handling costs will be charged by trans-shipper once the fish arrived in the States."

At first glance it looks like $6, but then it mentions the inland cost.

yes, i noticed that too after a second look

anyone know how to locate local breeders? id feel more comfortable picking up a fish than letting the postal service deliver it

Hi ECH2005 :)

One way is through this your local aquarium society. Quite often hobbyists have fish they have raised with loving care available for sale or trade.

You might also want to try putting a "want to buy" post on this forum:

It is new and still small, but it's worth a try. :D

I got my CT's at walmart believe it or not. Soem times there are "fancey" ones at regular stores, you just have to look.

shipping costs are different amounts to different places. theres no way someone in asia can tell you how much exaclty it will cost to ship to you. some people just go ahead and say $40 in all just to be safe.

on a slightly different note, i hate it when they put
5.00 box fee
2.00 heatpack fee (if needed)
3.00 fish import fee
xx.xx upps express/fedex fee
3.5% of total cost to cover paypal fee

i dont ever bid on those:(

bs...pure bs.....where do they think people are gettin this kind of money?! we're all too busy spendin it all on our fish that we all love so much!!
