I have a 50gal tank and I am using a Ehiem 2215 canister for my filter. I originally had the spray bar slightly above the water to oxygenate the water. I was recently told that I can place my spraybar anywhere in the tank and the water from the spraybar does not have to break the surface of the water to create oxygen. Is this true?

it is better to have the water fall effect anyway's. But, you can have it ripple the surface. You will deffinatley get more oxygen when you have the wa ter fall effect.

You can place it below the tank water level, about an inch, with it pointing upward slightly to ripple the surface. I have my only upstairs tank, a 65 gallon, set up this way, it is a dead quiet setup. Just keep an eye out for any gasping at the surface, this would indicate a low O2 level. This is not something you want to do with an overstocked tank, you need a higher O2 level for the fish, as well as for the larger colony of nitrifying bacteria.

Spraybar placement is one of those things that is most often personal preference, often dictated by your individual setup. I have a 72 gallon with the spraybar vertical, and an overstocked 55 running two canisters with no spraybars, just pouring into the tank. The 72 has two additional hob filters, so O2 levels are not a problem.

Thanks. I will try and point it upwards.

Your canister filters that do not have spraybars..... Did you take the spraybar off or did it not come with a spraybar?

It came with a spraybar, I took it off. I use this tank in my breeding setup, though it is set up as a sort of show tank, I guess you would call it the focal point of my fishroom. I use it for potential breeders, and resting breeding pairs, the spraybars get in the way when netting fish, the water splashing in adds O2.
