I have a male betta that had gotten finrot, and he looked like he was on the verge of really going downhill when I started treating him. I have been treating with ampicillin, and the rot has stopped progressing and has actually started to recede somewhat. My question is, how long do I treat? He still has some red edging to his fins, but he is swimming and eating normally now. Do I treat until all red color is gone? (He is a yellow betta). I am afraid if I stop treating the rot might come back. It really seemed to take hold quickly, so I`m afraid he might get past the point of no return if I give it a chance to advance again. So what should I do?

do u hav him in a quarintine tank??

If you stop treating him, he probably shouldn't get worse, but if you keep on treating, he will probably get better and there will be a less chance of it coming back.

Once you have completed the course as stated on the meds I would do water change (if directed) and then just keep the water REALLY clean.

He is in a one gallon bowl right now, not filtered. I have plans to get him into a cycled aquarium, but haven`t been able to do that as of yet. The bottle directions said to treat him for 10 days, but I have treated him longer than that.

I think over doing meds can be harmful if it says to stop after 10 days then that's what I'd do.
In an unfiltered bowl you need to be doing lots of water changes to remove the ammonia and such. With such a small water volume toxins are going to build up quicker.
If you can't get him a bigger home (3Gal+) then just get on top of the water changes for now and remember to dechlorinate and try to temp match the water if you can.
It might be worth filling a large bucket or container with water and dechloring and then you have it on hand ready to do a quick change and it'll be at least upto room temp as well - just make sure nothing can fall in the water to contaminate it (that includes mists from air freshners, hairspray, deodorants, etc).
