When Shrimps Attack

Im certain most shrimp are filter feeders and eat only algea. and sleeping fish dont sleep on the bottom

Tetra desease?

Neons and Cardinals do

Quite a lot of fish hover just over the substrate at night. My neons definitely do, as well as several others. Hard to imagine a shrimp getting one, but if you've seen it then I guess it can happen.

If you've seen the shrimp do it then it's definetly not an Amano shrimp. They have often been confused with long-armed shrimps, which is what i suspect you have. Or atleast something similar.

Can't say i've every seen any of my neons or xrays sleeping anywhere near the bottem, they usually just doze off where they'd usually be swimming during the day.

As far the the amano shrimps catching them, as someone's said the claws on an amano are really quite small. I've got some Amanos in one of my tanks, about 10 of them, ranging from an inch long, to the fully grown ones that are over 2 inches in size. Even the fully grown shrimp still have small claws, literally a few milimeters in size. They also have never been seen as being aggressive to any other members of the tank, often taking abuse and a few knocks from the other fish! Also, I'd not heard of them being nocturnal, mine are very active during the day, and seem to be less so at night. The only time I've ever seen the shrimp eating fish, is when the fish themsleves have died, and the shrimp have seen them in the tank before I've had a chance to remove them. Never have I seen the shrimp being aggressive to alive fish.

Could it be possible that you've either not got amano shrimp, but some of the more hostile shrimp varients, with larger claws or possibly as mentioned before could it be tetra disease? I don't think it would be any dodgy water perameters as shrimp are very sensitve with water perameters, and I think they'd be dying off before the fish in the tank.

Just a note on "Neon Tetra Disease", Cardinals are actually immune to it but they can carry it.

It's definitely not Amano Shrimp. Caridina multidentata (previously Caridina Japonica).
They could however eat on dead bodies. But they will never catch a fish or fry (I guess one can never say never - but I can't recall seeing a report on this and certainly have never seen it myself). I've kept them for years now in small community tanks with various small/tiny fish and fry and have never had any eaten or caught. My guess is that the neons die and the shrimp feed on them.
Or that you do not have Amano Shrimp.

Gotta agree - if you have seen them actually capture a live fish, kill it and eat it, then you dont have Caridina Multidentata, you have something else instead.

If you have seen them start to nibble a dead or very nearly dead fish, then it might be amanos.....

Ive got six, no way are they big enough to do even minor damage to the silvertips they live with, even if they tried!

:-( i got an answer for the case....

its a sad one...

im guessing the shimp that i bought brought in a deseise into the tank and slowly the cardinals were dieing ....

i was sure it was the shrimp because i saw one cardinal still alive but dieing being caught and eaten by a shrimp i was sure that it was the shrims that were killing them but they were dieing from the desiese and the srimp (being scavengers ) thought they were dead and they started to munch .....

i am sooo sad i lost 10 cardinals... and my filter is just going crazy trying to find a balance...

i think i need to start over:-( :-( :-(

if your fish are healthy you shouldn't have a problem with amano shrimp, having said that they will take their chances with weaker fish that can't swim away.
I have had a rummy nose tetra that got spooked and smacked head first into the side of the tank, it was concussed and spasming. Within minutes my amano's were on to the poor fish, picking at the delicate tail fin.

ive watched my tank at night before with my camera and its night vision shot thing.the shrimp tried to attack my largest figure 8 puffer and the puffer tore him apart.it throws its claws at the fish vigorusly and quick snapping them.it wasnt a match for my puffs beak though.i only feed them one at atime now and make sure they kill the shrimp.
its not that the shrimp is predatory, its that its opportunistic.if it gets the chance it will try.
