why is it that when guppy fry start to colour up that black always comes first? why cant red or yellow or any other colour come first?

this is just a guess but black is usually a dominant colour. maybe this is why this colour develops first or is noticeable first. i have heard it said that you cant see the colours of fry until they are a certain age yet i have found that you can tell straight away their colours. my silvers are silver when born...my blue platys are speckled and shimmering blue when born...my red platys are red when born and my orange swords are orange when born and so on. some colours may be a little less noticeable but the darker colours are dark right away. dont know if this helps at all but i thought id share :)

Yep I would have to agree...Although my female guppy fry dont appear to get their colour in tail fins until 2 months they get black first and then shades come through of what ever colour they will be. From what I understand and have seen also a yellow body is generally indicated at birth if the guppy is yellow for instance.. Black is the basic colour and darkest so it appears first if the guppy has black.

If you feel like it check out my other post - Im such an idiot - Feral and Fancy guppies together...bad mistake.

:( So so sad! My little guppy fry that I raised,,,,,, attacked tails...its sad whenyou see the colour coming through on babies and then thier little lush tails are attacked savagly. Boo wHooooooooo

well with my red/yellow's you get the yellow first and then red, but never get any black what so ever......

the colour cells are at different levels of the skin so i guess they devlope at different time depending ot what the deepest...

two of my baby guppies are getting the colour of black on there back fin. the other two look tanned like kind of yellow

There are more ferns and fish in there now...Ive also got some java moss and ferns on order and also 20female guppies of various colour. If you look closely you can see my baby guppy fry...Most of the larger fry are in main tank now. Tails are getting more colour every day. Sorry! I thought you all might like to see a cute pic of baby hedgehogs?
