I will be totally changing my tank over soon... all my fish are oldish and sadly are dying off. I will be going to a sand bottom, but still plastic plants, as real plants never seem to last more than a month.

If you could stock a 35 gallon tank with anything ($ isn't overly important, but not very expensive fish please). I need a few ideas to start me off. I'm thinking some gouramis and some smallish loachs.

Have fun guys!

EDIT - Hmmm. Let me rephrase this... If you had a 35 gallon tank with sand bottom and lots of swimming space and plants in the back and sides, what kind of fish would you put in it?

I've really fallen for my rainbowfish. I'd love to do a tank with rainbowfish and cories

Rainbowfish get to about 4" so you could have
6 cories
8 rainbowfish

See my sig for what I have in my 46gallon - If I'd known how much I was going to like the rainbowfish, I would have swapped some of the rosy barbs (which I also really like!) for a couple more rainbowfish.

do you know the scientific name for them? if i google Rainbow Fish... a million of different things come up

If I had a 35gal tank...Wow that would be a dream come true, because all I have are 20gallons and under.

Well these are the fish I would want:
#1 Red-tailed Black Shark
#2 Flying Fox (moved from one of my 20gal)
#2 Bristlenose Catfish (moved from my 20gal tank)
#10 Leopard Danio
#3 Lace Gourami
#2 Angelfish
#4 Beared Corydoras
#6 Platy

And that would be about it... I hope it isn't much. If you want scientific names please ask me.

my dream tank wow where to start i want a big tank that works as a feature in a wall/ or a cabinet and i would love to have convict fish and electric yellows and just about all fish that eat neons cause at the moment i am restricted to what fish i can have because my mum wants neons

dream tank hey?
If i had unlimited resources($$$) i would set up a multi levelled tank with a above ground place for basking, i would include 2 - 3 juivenile Eastern water dragons( a lizard) with some archer fish. As both eat insects the critters could be released and the action would be awesome to watch.
Not sure if itd work but id love to try.

My dream tank is in very early blueprint stage.Imagine this

you have a tank 7'L' x 3'd x 2'w
massive i know.

at the 2/3 point of the tank in length with a water level of 2' which will leave 1' of suface air it will go into a grass banking leading to the 18" of dry area.
the filter will be housed under the grassy area and above it will be a condensation extractor and living in the tank will be two geco lizards and in the water obviously fish.
i have already got the glass cutting plans sorted out,i'm just waiting for a guy i know who is lizard mad to confirm it's doable. if it isn't i may simply consider using tropical frogs or terrapins

i'd put in some dwarf gourami, cories, and maybe some tetras

:)

wouldnt angels get too big for the tank with all those other guys in there?
i would think so too! they can get 12" tall (or 30cm) but i think it would take a while to get that size

i'm no expert on angle fish, but never heard of any that only grow 11cm... did a fish store employee tell you this (if so, dont trust them!) or did you research this yourself with the scientific name of that fish???

wolfie, be sure to post photos if doable, what sort of geckos are you considering using? The water dragon is the only FW aquatic lizard ive heard of.

i wasnt basing my tank on a freshwater lizard
i was trying to create a two tone enviroment.
so in effect it's would be like keeping a couple of hamsters in there instead.
of course i wont do that but thats the sort of theme.
if thats isn't possible then i'll get some sub-aquatic animals like you said.
But who knows maybe a snake of some small variety.
