Hi

I bought 6 assassin snails and when I put them in my tank some of them crawled up the glass and out of the water and some didnt move at all. 5 were bought online and 1 from my lfs.

its been like this for a day and a half now.

only 2 were still at the top of the glass and the rest lifeless on the substrate, iv taken them out of the tank now and put them in a jug of dechlorinated water.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Hmm seems quite unusual.

I have assassin snails and never had issues.

What are the water parameters?
Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph may help a little too.

Also what is tank water temp?

And lastly, is your tank cycled?
if unsure what cycled tank is, have a read of this - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/421488-cycling-your-new-fresh-water-tank-read-this-first/

am 0
ni 0
na 30
ph 7.6

temp is a little unstable atm but generally between 26-28 depending if the lights are on

tank is cycled, 56l/15g 24 x 12 x 12
adding easylife carbo daily and easylife profito, heavily planted
use seachem prime

All sounds perfectly fine.

Hmm.....

Have you added any new plants, or decor to the tank recently?

Also what else is in tank, stocking wise i mean?

Plants are mostly all new, mainly from aqua essential, all soaked and thoroughly rinsed before planting

New wood added too, and some pebbles

Stock
25 Danio Erythromicron
2 D Gourami
1 BN Plec

If it's an established tank there's obviously something in there that they are not liking and they are trying to escape.
If there are no other issues, they may not be liking the Easycarbo or Profito if it's being dosed at full strength. When I contacted EasyLife about these products and inverts they said they are safe, but to start of with lower doses - maybe half strength or even quarter strength for a week then gradually increase weekly til it's full strength. I did it slowly over about 3 months and my shrimp and snails have been fine.

Some images so you can see the decor

I got 5 trumpet snails at the same time from another online seller and they are acting the same, I didn't realise at the time that the assassin would eat the trumpets.

Thanks for the info, i will try that if they turn out OK.

Assassin snails generally speaking will eat any other type of snail even if it's much bigger than the assassin.
Looks like we were posting at the same time!

Makes a lot of sense what Mamashack says about these easycarbo ferts but since I've not used these so cannot really comment on that.

And yes, Assassin snails will eat trumpets and any other snails really.

There is something in the water that is not agreeable with snails, wonder if you had this tank as a SW tank and maybe there is a small amount of SW residue left or even had medication treatment in tank with copper in and copper is really hard to get rid of, even with carbon.

Just thinking about what has been added to the tank, the java was glued on with super glue the one beginning with c, it has no other ingredients.

I didn't soak the wood but I rinsed it.

The pebbles are from my garden and didn't fizz with the vinegar test.

Some of the plants are weighed down with the metal strips they come with
The tank was second hand. The seller said he had guppies in it previously but was down sizing.

All iv had in it is what you see. No meds or salt have ever been added by me.

3 of the assassin snails in the jug are heading for the surface?! It is literally straight from my tap with a drop of prime.

How do I know if the others are actually dead? All but 2 were acting dead in the tank but now another is moving.

The only thing that springs to mind from that last list is the metal strips for plants. These can contain lead an other metals.

But generally speaking, these should be safe for aquarium use.

Think the glue you use had just cyanoacrylate which is perfect.

Did you clean the pebbles with hot water?
Pebbles from garden may have had weedkiller and suchlike sprayed on it if it was near grass or flowerbeds.

Pebbles were soaked multiple times with boiling water straight from the kettle.

What is your tap water parameters?

gH and kH as well if you have that?

May be nothing but checking all avenues.

I dont have a test kit for gH and kH but my water is hard

Just a though but I think it would have been better to soak the wood for 3-4 weeks before using it as it usually has a lot of tanning in it, even shop bought wood. This is what I do and had no problems with the water. Also check with your water company and ask what they add to the water and if they have treated it with something to rid it of little crustaceans.
