unfortunately my Betta died in the early hours of the morning :rip: what ever happened to him happened very fast and it was very sudden

(I will resize images when i get a chance more bothered about getting them on and getting my Betta better again)

hi there, when i went to feed my Betta tonight i noticed a few problems with him, he has had a major loss of colour in his tails and on the underside of his body, 2 sections of his body near his tail and his stomach area seem to have gotten larger they and the sections that have gotten larger have lost some colour, the bottom of his mouth has seemed to flare open and looks rarther strange, he has also seems to have lost the will to swim like he just cant be bothered he lets the filter output push im around a little bit swims to the top for some air sinks down and sits on some of the plants and dosnt really bother to do much more hes always been very active and likes a good swim :fish: i have had this betta for about 5-6 months now and never had a major major problem with him apart from a small case of White Spot which was cleared up no problem. Im going to be honest for people who have seen my other posts about my new River Reef tank hes in the tank, i cracked one of the side panels on my edge and was slowly leaking water so i had no choice but to swap him and the kind people over at Fluval have agreed to fix the crack for me or replace the tank but thats another story for another time. so yes i know i have put my betta into a non-cycled tank but i am using mature filter media from my fluval, doing 2 25% water changes a day and testing a minimum of twice a day to see what the water levels are like and theres not even a slight increase in Ammonia, Nitrate or Nitrites. These are the results of the last test less than a hour ago -

PH is 7.2ish
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrate - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0pmm

(so please nobody harass me on the fact am doing a Fish-in cycle with a Betta i had no choice and didnt want to put him in a tiny bowl like you see some Bettas kept in)

any help with this will be very much appreciated
So heres some pictures to show you my betta

My betta is very red always has been so the clear loss of colour is very obvious. as in the pictures the areas circled are the areas that the most colour has been lossed on this image.

i cant actually see any patches, only the clear tail ends.
He looked fine to me. i know when Betta fish are unhappy they fade colours, My royal blue VT does it all the time.
maybe he just got stressed from the move? :( poor fishie x

the pictures arnt very good like they where taken on my phone and its crap :/

he seemed fine with the move to be honest the first thing he did after i put him in the new tank after cracking the other one was swim around get to know where he was found a area in the back corner that was not really disturbed much by the filter output and started building a bubble nest and he was in the tank for about 5-6 days and he was perfectly fine swimming around eating as normal adding to his bubble nest and i went to feed him yesterday morning and he didn't eat any of it so i scooped it out, he had no lose of colour on his tail or nothing he looked perfectly fine and then i went out for the day came back in went to feed him again to see if he would eat this time then i noticed the change of colour and i was strait on here so what ever happened to him it happened very quickly with very little signs of any problems to start off with :( gutted he was me fav little fish aswell just wish i knew what happened :(

did you test the water out of intrest?

yeah tested this morning when i found him - 0ppm for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite PH is 7.2, and i tested ammonia last night when i found him not looking too good and it was 0ppm because that was my first thought with it been a none cycled tank it could have been ammonia but its a 48L tank with 1 betta in it with mature media i dont think the ammonia would spike high enough to cause any damage to him and i knew if it did spike it would harm him which is why i have been doing 2 25% water changes every day just to be on the safe side with a water test before the water change

something wasnt right if you had 0 for Nitrate? if it was mature media you would have 20-30 nitrate?

iv always had 0ppm for the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite every since i got my fluval cycled its always been like that even with the new tank its like that could it be my test kit giving a false reading? :/ i havnt been testing it wrong because i followed the test kit instructions word by word :/

got the test kit back out again. the Nitrate has more of a orange tint to it now but like you said even with the mature media its still no where near the 20-30ppm mark and thats testing it and leaving it to stand for 10-15 minutes

The API nitrate test is slowly but surely getting a poor reputation for giving false zeros.

You have to shake seven barrels of wossname out of reagent no.2, and bang the bottle on a table a few times. It has a powder within it, which can precipitate out of the solution, and needs a lot of agitation to re-dissolve.

i give the bottles a shake before i use them. force of habit shaking the Dechlorinator bottle before using it, but its just a quick shake nothing to vigorous. a will remember to give the bottles a really really really good shake next time. am not going to be happy if its my test kit giving false readings im going to be rather annoyed

In fairness, it's only the nitrate that's got the problem, and that's probably the least important one. Certainly of the "Big 4".
