Whats your substrate?? (your sand/gravel)

If thats too sharp it could be causing that. Also apparently plastic plants tear them up too.
Also, check to make sure he's not snagging himself on the new water bottle filter addon, as it may have a sharp edge.

The gravel is not sharp at all if you want to take a look at it here is the link ,its hard to tell in that picture though. I don't think he would be able to get to the bottle, but just to be sure how would I dull that? I have one plastic plant and the are are silk, I'll take the plastic one out if that will help. It seems to be running all down him tail though. Just to be sure I cleaned his tank with a gravel vacuum (I removed more then 50% of the water) which was very helpful and it got a lot of grime. Then I added some product that would help the regrowth of his tail.

Running all down his tail?? Does it have a white edge to it?
Does he have any tank mates?

If you don't think it's the modified bottle then leave it, but keep an eye on it as much as possible.
No he has the tank all to himself, but yes it does have a white edge to it. I took out the plastic plant and added some Bettafix to the water, is there anything else I can do to help?

If there's a white edge to his tail, he may have fin rot.

Fin rot is exactly what it says, the fins slowly rot from the edges inwards. It's quite easily cured by a trip to the local pet store to pick up some anti-fungal medicine, or anti-fin rot if anyone does it.

Treat him as stated on the bottle.

Any chance you could post a photo up before you go ahead and treat for fin rot though, to be safe??

And stop using the bettafix until after you finish treating with anti-fungal, as it may interfere and make the fish worse. Unfortunately bettafix is unlikely to heal the fin rot.

Yes there sort of does. I will try to post a picture tomorrow. As in white ring what do you mean like that? Do you have a picture I could take a look at?

This is quite an extreme version of fin rot

Basically the fins start eroding away, until there's less and less tail, and it can appear to have a fluffy white edge, like in the picture.

before we jump to conclusions, this rip in his fins, appeared after the bottle was placed in the tank, right?

There will be your anwser..................

It happened so suddenly I am almost sure that it isn't fin rot. Yes, it was actually the day I put it in so that would make sense. The white ring doesn't look like that at all it is more thicker and not clumpy so it must just be his color. So what to I do with he bottle? I have noticed he likes to swim over there and sit when the filter is off. Hopefully that's the problem and not fin rot.

Also would 5 Gallons be considered a small tank? I am starting to get cloudiness in my tank, I read that when starting the cycle that means that the cycle is trying to start or something like that.

Would you still like pictures? They are not very good my darn camera won't focus!

I just want to say I am so grateful for all the help I have had, it has made this a far better experience then doing it on my own. So thank you everyone! :good:

If your water is getting cloudy I would suggest you do a large water change immediately, as if this is a fish-in-cycle you should be doing a water change every day.

If you can't get the picture, then you can't, it's as simple as that. Makes me wonder why all camera's don't auto-macro.

I guess I will never say almost sure again. He does have fin rot and now I ma sure. I checked his tail today and it was worse. Then I noticed the white on his fins not a lot but some. I will run to the store and get some anti-fungal sometime this week. Any suggestions?

Thanks! I think I know how it got in. I just recently purchased a plant from pet smart and I was so stupid not to notice hoe extremely dirty their water was. How long do you think it will take him to heal? With I have to do anything else to cure it besides putting aniti-fungal meds in? Is that the reason my water is so cloudy? And should I do a water change before putting the medication in.

Sorry I know this sounds like a stupid question but do you need a biological filter to cycle your tank or is that just the term for "my tank is filtered". I just have a power filter. I am having trouble getting the cycle going.

Also it might be an idea to check if you should remove any carbon from the filter if you use any medication, when I thought I had fin rot the stuff I used said to remove it before using. It turned out to be fin nipping and now he is healing very well, has taken a few weeks but he's back to normal now!

Hmmm I am not sure but it doesn't say anything on the instructions. Would that help if I took it out?

What if my Betta just has a little bit of white on his top fin and a bit on his lower? Is this just the beginning stages?

yeah the carbon needs to come out, it'll effect the treatment.

And if it is definately fin rot, you want to stop it before it gets worse. It increases the recovery chances of your fish the earlier you catch it.

If your water is cloudy could it be ammonia build up?? Do you have an ammonia test kit?

If not, i suggest you do a 50% water change, then treat with the anti-fungal (if you are sure it's fin rot)
