What's with this new guy?

Unfortunately, no...the butthead hasn't eaten a thing. :grr:

I'm going to wait until the morning to try again...maybe if he thinks he won't get any, he'll eat. lol

Atleast his attitude and activity hasn't diminished. If you didn't know better, you would think he was completely normal.

Butthead...that's what his name SHOULD be.

Dixaisey....hang in there yesterday was exactly 8 days since I brought ole Rocky home. As usual when I got home from work I went to feed him and he took off to hide behind his plant as he does whenever I approach; i dropped 4 Hikari gold pellets in his tank and sat back and watched as I always do.

Well after a couple minutes he came out and ate for the first time. I'm hoping he will begin to see me as a food source and become a bit less shy but at least he's eating.

Ok, I've noticed him "twitching" these last few minutes...He's at the surface of the tank and he's sort of acting like he wants to break out. Maybe he's not happy in a one gallon tank? He wasn't stuck in a cup long enough to appreciate the room. :p It's not like he has ick...he's no bouncing off of anything. Now he's swimming normal...maybe this is a clue to my ongoing mystery?

Atleast he doesn't hide from me...he always greats me like everyone else.

Butthead... ;) :sly:

That's great news FanOFish  I hope dixaisy930 will be saying the same thing soon!

If he's shy, take great care with the way you approach his tank. The fish can feel the vibrations in the water and if you have a heavy step it can frighten them. Try to walk softly as you get near him. :D

Do you think more hiding spaces would help? Like I said before though, he doesn't act shy, and he never hides from me. He's at the front of his tank like the other guys when I come into the room, but sticks his tongue out when I put food in there (not really...fish don't have tongues, do they?   )

I'm going to get some plants (maybe bannana plants) for all of my bettas. (the lady at a lfs said I couldn't have plants in an unfiltered tank, but was told different in the "aquarium garden" forum on here).

What other plants would be good for bettas?

of course you can have plants in an unfiltered bowl (some people)
The surface disturbance of a filter chokes plants usually

wendttll (sp?) does great in bowls, it requires very little light and is low-growing

Hi dixaisy930 :)

Plants seem like a good idea. Ruby likes the amazon swords that are in his tank, but if you have a small tank that you have to take apart an clean regularly, rooted plants will be hard to keep. In that case, cabomba or anachris (sp) would be a good choice. They are inexpensive and can be replaced as they break down.

I think that I am going to go nuts from seeing all the bad advice people have been getting from their lfs. :hyper:

A few weeks ago, I got a new split tank and a second betta. The new one was half the size of the one I had and the bigger one constantly would go to the divider and puff out on the little guy.

Anyhow... he didn't eat for over a week. Seriously, I fed them both bloodworms and pellets twice a day and he would not eat a thing for like 9 days. He acted fine, swimming although not extremely active (he still isn't, so it must just be his nature), but he wouldn't eat a thing.

Now he eats like a hog and is doing well, so have faith in your new buddy.

dix~ try some frozen krill, I was breaking some up to feed my cichlids last night and I gave my favorite little betta a bite since he was begging. He went bonkers for it! LOVED it! The female next to him must have heard his "mmm's" because she started going crazy until I gave her some, then she started spinning in circles looking for more and then the male next to HER wanted some....so they all had a little ;) ,and not one of them turned it down  :D :p
