Can anyone tell me whats wrong with our Goldfish? It has got a big lump at the back end of its body. It is whiter on oneside than the other and looks a bit like its pregnant! Its eating and swimming ok, although it is resting on the bottom of the tank more oftern than usual.

Please help, Thankyou xx

is it on one side or both? it might just be a fat ass it looks too small to be pregnant.

i can see from the pic that the tail is being pushed upward as well. it could be a tumour but you would need to catch it and feel if it is a solid lump or if its mushy.

No, he's not just fat. That looks very much like the start of a tumor. I'm not exactly sure how you would treat this but can you give us your tanks parameters?

Ammonia level
Nitrite level
NitrAte level
Ph level
(all above can be obtained for free by bringing a water sample to the nearest pet store)
How big the tank is
How long it's been running and what filters you use
How many fish are in there
What medications and/or dechlorinators you have used

These are all helpful in giving a diagnosis of the problem.

Thanks for the info, we'll do some more investigating and keep you all updated :fun:

I think when people refer to fish as being "pregnant" they don't mean literally loaded with live babies...they mean they may have eggs in them.

It looks like a tumor to me as well. Pretty fish though.

Ok! So it looks like my fish has a tumor! The poor thing, does anyone know how long they live for once they have one? The lump is hard and is getting bigger, is there anything we can do?

Nothing I really know of will treat them, you can take it to a fish vet but that gets real expensive. Other than that sometimes they partcialy fall off. :/

I saw on Animal Planet I think once this man took a koi from a breeder in Japan because the breeder didn't want it because of a tumor. But it was a beautiful koi, so it was taken to the vet to get surgery and they removed the tumor. But I can't imagine the expenses.

theres nothing much you can do for him, he will eventually be taken by it as it grows and blocks organs. a vet would be your best option to see how advanced it was. sorry :(
