Can anyone identify this bug that I found in my fry tank?

It's about 15mm long (3/4 inch).

Is it one of the good guys or should I throw it out in the garden for the birds?

Hate bugs, don't know what that is at all, post in the chit chat forum more people will take a look at it over there, someone bound to know what it is.

I don't seem to be able to post pictures to chit-chat so I put it here.

There isn't a 'File Attachment' box on the post form.

I can't imagine any type of bug being good for your fry tank o_o If I were you, I'd throw it out. But that's just me.

For now i would remove it even if you have to keep it in a bucket while you get a reply, good luck.

Hi

From the image you have provided it is a nymph and probably of the order Plecoptera Commonly called a stonefly

The immature form are aquatic and resemble the adults with the exception of gills.

Larvae are either primarily herbivoredetritivores, insectivores, or omnivores, and in some cases their diet shifts among these categories as they develop.

the most common form is herbivoredetritivores and would probably be feeding on plant and decaying plant matter in the aquarium. It is unlikely that the aduls would lay there eggs in the tank if there was no food source of this type to provide sustinance to their young.

I would need to know what you have in your tank (possible food source) and preferably a photo of and adult if possible.

I would not have thought this to be a problem in a fish tank and is probably a compliment to your skills as they only lay there eggs in slow moving, well oxygenated water.

I doubt that its a dragonfly nymph as the aantennae is quite large and visible in your photo, although they do have antennae they are usually small and difficult to see with the naked eye.

Thanks everyone.

It's going in the garden - into the pond! The fish in there can eat it if they want to, they're big enough. I'm not risking putting it back with the fry.

Looks like a dragonfly--had one tiny one in my tank which I placed into our outdoor pond. I believe they come in plants--buy new plants recently?
