hi im doing a iwagumi layout in a 10 gallon tank ....ive seen many types of substrate im looking to keep a black substrate.

Ive looked a products such as ADA amazonia ...Seachem Flourite black sand...

what do you believe would be good for Iwagumi and foreground

I'd go with Ada but it's not cheap and it comes in black, when planting you could put in cardboard barriers and put different substrate in the planted sections and non planted sections. This would save you putting expensive nutrient rich substrate to waste in non planted sections and you can use plain black sand and the line between the two substrates won't be seen as the planted sections will overlap slightly just showing the black sand. Look up Oliver Knott at the green machine on YouTube and it will show you him doing it. Hope this helps.

thanks that does help ....im a tad confused because dont we need to
use all the front and back for the foreground plants used in iwagumi

i saw Oliver Knotts beginners Iwagumi and he usues one type of substrate so this is where im a tad confused haha

When you said iwagumi foreground i thought you meant for exposed substrate, should have put foreground planting lol im a bit slow today :)

haha its quite alright....this whole substrate thing though has me really confused and knackerd!

What plants are u using? If they're low tech plants then you won't really need amazing substrate, just buy which ever u prefer.

I am using flourite black sand for my iwagumi layout (check the journals).

as far as plants im still looking into which ones will give me a beautiful carpet effect..

probally hairgrass near back and Hemianthus "Cuba"

idk im up for suggestions.

I have Co2 and 2 watts per gallon

just need the substrate and rock!
