Whats The Best External Filter?

thermo filters have a built in heater, the ecco's are small canisters and the professional come in 1,2 and 3. pro3 being the latest ones.

is your tank planted? if your aiming for the 10x rule you want a 2074,2076,2078, 28080,2180 etc, but they are big and quite expensive. if not after that much turnover go for a 2073 or 2075 i just picked one up on ebay used for £50. if you go on zooplus.de (make sure use german site) you can get a brand new 2075 with media for £130 which is a bargain as you get a 1st time buyer discount.

I'm not familiar with the 10x rule but yes my tank is planted. Also I need 1 fairly powerful as I've got a few plecos in the tank that leave a lot of mess that my 2 internal filters don't pick up plus they seem to get clogged very easily. I am looking at spending somewhere up to around £75 depending on how good the filter is but was hoping to get 1 for about £50/60

ah right, i doubt you will get a big eheim for that money, you'd struggle even to get a classic. Ive only used eheims so couldnt comment on other brands :)

If it was worth the money I'd probably stretch a bit more but I was going to get a brand new Fluval 205 for £55 or a used 306 for a little bit more but I missed out :( might have a look at the Eheims though and see if I can find a decent 1 for the right price

For a moderately small tank like 150 litres, I would go for a Rena XP2, in fact I did for a 55 US gallon, 200 litres, tank. It is dead quiet and can be had for about your maximum price. Mine is now 5 years old and has never made any noise or leaked a single drop. I am sure other manufacturers also make equally good products but I have no experience with them.

I bought a Marineland Magnum 350 Bio Pro system for my 60 gallon and I love it! It's easy to disconnect the hoses for filter cleaning with minimal water loss and it runs so quiet once the air is bled. It costed me about $130 USD, but I think it was money well spent. Very well designed product and doesn't leak at all. I was worried about leaking with all the hose connections, but so far, it works great! Much better than the HOB (hang on back) filters I am used to. The pro version also comes with a pair of biowheels. This is what I got:

I have a Rena Filstar Xp3 on my 75g and love it so much, I bought the xp2 for my smaller tank! They are quiet, easy to open up to clean or move media, and start right back up again.
