I currently have:
ph 6.8
kh 2
gh 3-4

With these parameters what apisto or dwarf cichlid would survive and possibly breed in these conditions, is the ph too high to induce spawing and if so would I be able to filter my water through peat to actually have a pair breed? I have kribs at the moment but thinking about getting a new tank.

Hi there,

You're water conditions aren't that bad for Apistogramma. Have a look at the following for starters, you should get some breeding sucess without having to alter your water conditions:

Apistogramma cacatuoides
Apistogramma juruensis
Apistogramma eunotus
Apistogramma nijsenni
Apistogramma panduro

Of course there are a load more that may be suitable, but a lot will depend on your location and what is actually available.

Andrew

apistogramma baenschi
apistogramma borellii
apistogramma trifasciata
apistogramma hongsloi
apistogramma steindachneri

Have read these are all pretty much easy to breed.

Thanks for the feedback, most of the above named dwarfs are readily available in my LFS's so will possibly give them a go, would you recommend filtering the water through peat anyways for optimum conditions.

Hi there,

Filtering through peat will probably help in the long run, beware though that it will discolour your water.

Andrew

I have bred blue rams in water very close to that.

It will discolor the water tea-coloured, which is natural for most acidic water fish, also I think it would look cool!

The water does look good when it is peat filtered (black water). Put some peat in a nylon and drop it in your filter.

Think i`ll go and get some peat then, I actually prefer a slightly darker colour of water, think it looks more natural, besides my water is slightly discoloured at the moment due to the tannins from my wood.

Is sphagum peat available from most LFS's or is it stocked in places like Garden centre's? Whats the benefit of using that kind?

I ues that kind because ity is all I can find with no fertilizers added. You can find it at any garden center
