Whats preventing you from...

I just want to get a decent quality plakat betta from a breeder and keep it in a planted 10 gallon tank. But, college, parents, and space are keeping me from doing that; instead, I have to settle for a bunch of 5 gallons with fake plants so they're easy to clean and transport.

Parents/money and space to a small degree....nothing a simple re-adjustment to the furniture can't fix, mostly the parents

My dream set up realistically? Well, realisticly for me right now is a 75G marine tank......But in the future? I'd like a 300G Reef tank with lots of Tangs, Clown fish, Trigger fish, Lion Fish, Puffer fish, you know, things like that ;)
Whats keeping it from me now? Money :(
And the fact that I live with my parents, and they both love fish, but not when I ask for a *little* finacial help. My mother would spend her whole bank account on aquariums if she could, because she likes fish as much as I do, but my father, well, lets just say he'd spend more money hiring someone to clean the tanks then he would on the tanks themselfes. :dunno:
So Money

I too live with my parents. I dont get that much money, but the limiting factors are basically space and money (since neither of my parents like fish). Can't wait till I move out...

My dream setup would actually be multiple tanks:

2000 gallon--dovii, jags, pike, red devils, trimac
200 gallon--texas, midas
200 gallon--oscar
75 gallon--planted w/CO2, suspended lighting, HUGE school of about 75 tetras, some corys, and some Amano shrimp
75 gallon--convicts
(10x) 10 gallon--male bettas
possibly start researching marine fishkeeping...

Time is my main limiting factor, once we have eventually moved house (please let it actually happen this year) the only thing holding me back from getting a 1000g tank built and set up will be getting the fish house built first.

Space is the big one. 3-bedroom house, which houses me, 2 kids, husband and my office. Also, when I'm not fish-watching, I do academic research, which means LOTS of books- and they take up SO much space.

My dream set-up would be 2 large tanks either side of the living room (not this living-room for sure).

One would be South American: a pair of bristlenoses, a nice big shoal of phantom tetras, green swordtails. They've got baby bristlenoses at the lfs, tiny little things like spotted tadpoles and they are absolutely gorgeous.

The other would be Asian: khuulie loaches, giant danios or lace gouramis, rasboras.

Oh well, can't afford it, anyway.

Money, and the fact that I can't find the species of fish I want outside of Thailand (Betta imbellis, Betta brownorum, and other Betta genus variations). Oh, yes, and my parents.

1) Foundation & structure (don't think a 1st floor flat will support what I'd want  )
1) Space (unless it's suspended from the ceiling, it's not going to fit anywhere else!)
2) Time (I would need 48 hour days)
3) Money (to a smaller degree, as a project can be done in stages)

Edit: I've just realised what the solution is ! Move back to South Africa and go diving every weekend :p

Space and Money.

Mainly space as I live in a small flat. I will probably never be able to buy a house in this country with blair and his muppets in charge.

Diving in Tropical African waters!!! You're braver than i am with crocs, hippos, tiger fish, giant electric catfish and god knows what else lurking about under the water. I think i preffer dangerous aquatic animals to be behind at least half an inch of glass

Money - need a few thousand to convert my garage into a fish room
Oh yeah and "the missus" - shes a non-believer and thinks I waste too much money on fish
