Whats Happening To My Plants?

this is my lighting up times. how much would you say to reduce?

light 1 - on at 1500, off at 2200

light 2 - on at 1520, off at 2230

light 3 - on at 1600, off at 2300

all lights are equal in power.

just to add the tank is also near a window so gets quite a bit of light anyway but i have the curtain pulled accross half the window to avoid any direct sunlight.

also when it comes to ferts i have absolutely no idea so would probably prefer not to go down the DIY method and buy some from the shelf. which would you suggest to get?

ive turned 1 of the lights off to see how it goes but should i reduce the on times for the other 2?

Crypts Crypts and more Crypts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D 300 should just about see you right. Then you don't need to worry about any deficiencies as they just grow to what ever you give them.

can anyone advise on my lighting?

will removing 1 tube be enough or shall i reduce the times as well?

the anubias is getting worse now  and i have some vallis on the way....

which ferts?

go any pics of the anubias?

Are your 2 filters still agitating the surface a lot? I have raised my water level to the brim to keep my bio-wheel from splashing, and my external spraybar was lowered. It's soon to tell, but no more melted leaves.

the filters have not been touched so the aggitation is still the same. ill try reducing the surface movement and see if it helps :good:

time for some Carbon, Matt if you keep the lighting as it is. Trim those leaves off as the won't repair.

ive just adjusted the filter heads to ease the aggetation on the surface.

is that all i will need Ian, just carbon? would something like easycarbo be ok or is there something else? any ferts? TPN+ flourish etc?

after using the carbon will i be able to turn the 3rd light back on or shall i leave it off?

sorry about all the questions

When you answer the above...Could you please answer this one too... Can dosing carbon every other day possibly work out, after reducing surface agitation? I think I have read somewhere that someone is dosing every other day. I guess it could just be a trial and error thing...

 Sorry for jumping in your thread Mattlee, similar issues and all.

You'll find a sensible pressurised system will work out more expensive to buy, but far cheaper to run in the long term, but easycarbo will work.....You should probably dose ferts at a basic level anyway, not necessarily macro's though, dry ferts are cheap to do.

Yes, you should be able to turn the 3rd light back on.

Not the foggiest idea, although instinctively I'd say no as the fluctuations would be bad, but I'd await someone more familiar with it.

Liquid carbon has quite a short half life in the tank - less than 24 hours. That's why you have to dose it daily, and at the same time each day. From experience, adding carbon at different times each day if forgetting to add it some days is worse than not adding it. It's totally not suitable for someone like me who can barely remember to feed the fish, never mind dose carbon daily! That's why I don't use it any more.

So, FF04 - the answer is no, dosing every other day wouldn't help I'm afraid.

Honestly Matt, if you are going down the route of increasing co2 etc, you need a pressurized system. You can set one up for less than £100 probably, but then all you have to do is replace/refill the bottles. Liquid carbon is expensive, and you'd need a lot of it. How do you feel about pressurized co2?

my only concern about a pressurised canister is wher i would put it.

my cabinet is full of FX5's and with 2 young kids running about i wouldnt want to put it next to the tank.... i guess i would need a decent sized canister otherwise i would be changing it too often. also with my ND tank there is no room for anything else to fit through the gaps made for filter pipes etc due to having an FX5 on each side, so 2 pipes each side.

ive never done proper planted tbh just dosed ferts in a tank i had a while back.

if i was to just get slow growers like anubias and lose the rest would that help at all? maybe not as my anubias is one thats going funny

im rubbish with plants
