The term "cycle" comes from the "Nitrogen Cycle" of environmental science. Our reference articles in our Beginners Resource Center, which no doubt you've been pointed to, will even have a nice diagram of this that's like a picture. The nitrogen cycle is perhaps the most core thing to know about the hobby. Its well worth learning both in theory and hands on.
