I found this ad posted today:

I have a blonde Oscer we have had for about 2 years about as big as a man's hand and a beautiful gold fish about the same size that we would like to get rid of. My son has lost interest in them and my husband and I would like to find a nice home for them instead of letting them go in the lake.

It depends on whether or not they're giving me the fish. If they are, I say "Thanks." If not, I say that if their son wants a new toy to occupy himself for another year or two, the Xbox 360 just got a price cut.

I wrote them and suggested to call around and a fish store will take them (I'm in the U.S.)

I can't believe people don't think of that !

If this was in the UK they would be prosecuted for dumping tropical fish into UK waterways, if they were caught that is.

is it just aquatic stores that take fish back. or would say a dobbies or pets at home take them aswel? like if you wanted to try fish breeding but couldnt cope with the fry

Big chain stores generally won't buy fish.

Another option is to use excess fry as feeders. Get yourself a 25 gallon tank and a mid-sized cichlid like a convict, and he'll take care of most any unhomeable fry. Even if you do have someplace to sell them, depending on what you breed and how successfully, you might not be able to sell all of them - a pair of convicts or a half dozen guppies will put out more fry than you'll ever be able to sell. If you're breeding highly bred varieties, you'll likely have to cull some to maintain the strain.

is that not a bit cruel? i wasnt interested in making money off them, i meant would they just take them. i bred a nice brood of mollies a few months back and kept the fry isolated in one of the quarentine nets and my betta somehow jumped into it and ate them all, it was heart breaking, but that might have been because it was my first succesful breed

aww, i have had 3 lots from my platy now, it will be 4 very soon! do you bmx?

it took me ages to breed mollies, 2 females died during pregnancy, the one that did lay died about 2 weeks later after birth, and yea i do bmx

Sheesh, what is wrong with people?? That would be illegal, probably at both the state and federal level. If someone forwarded their ad to Florida "Fish and Game" or whatever their state agency is called, they would have a much bigger problem than the unwanted fish. If I was interested in the fish, I would call these people and enlighten them when I picked up the fish. If I wasn't, I thnk I would bring the ad to the attention of the Florida officials. They already have their hands full with escaped and released parrots, pythons, caimen, iguanas, you name it.
