What would you do?

Hope its okay to revive this thread, searched it up while doing some more research on panda cories.

Based on the replies from other panda owners, it does seem to attest that panda cories can die at any time for no particular reason. I always knew pandas were more delicate than other cory species, but with them dying for no reason, I am thinking twice about adding more pandas to my shoal of 6.

If they die due to a few missed water changes/gravel vacs, that is fair enough, but them dying for no apparent reason at any given time will be hard to take once you become attached to these little cute pandas.

I was thinking of adding another 6 pandas from the same LFS I got the current 6 from, but am not so sure after reading these replies.

Hi ey2006 :)

Wow! This is an old thread.

Since I last wrote on it, I've managed to get my pandas healthy and thriving. It was not the easiest thing to do, but it's been some time since I've had any unexplained deaths. They have been spawning regularly too.

I think they don't adapt easily to changes in water conditions, but once they do they don't seem too much more difficult to keep than other corys. Some of the pandas I've raised and passed along to other members of my local aquarium society are still doing fine. In this case, of course, they have stayed in pretty much the same water as they were hatched and grew up in.

Their tank must be kept clean and the bottom should be vacuumed regularly. Keep the nitrate level low.

Here's some pictures of mine:

nice looking fish you have Inchworm.. and wow that is one fat female in the first pic.

I too have kept pandas in the past and never really thought they were any more difficult to keep then any other cory. then i began to read how people have trouble keeping them which i thought was odd. i also would like to add that they do better if the temps don't get too high in the tank as well as the good water quality.

Hi Inchworm,

Thanks for the reply. :) Yes this thread is quite old! haha

Great to hear your pandas are thriving, this is proof that they can live a healthy and long life. Its just that after reading those comments, it does make you think twice before adding any more pandas.

Given that pandas can do well after adapting and settling into the their new environment, I am inclined to add a few more pandas in a weeks time, if the current group of cories look settled into the water conditions. Given the fact that I'll be getting a few more from the same group at the same LFS, I'm hoping the new additions will do fine when introducing them into the tank. They may even recognise their friends (the existing pandas in my tank now)! :D

I do 25% water changes twice a week and do a gravel vac each time and nitrate is usually at 20-30ppm, so hopefully the pandas will be able to grow and thrive in these conditions!

Awesome pics you've attached, thanks for sharing them. I especially love the 2nd pic, how many pandas are there in that tank?

Finally, I've noticed your long and amazing list of corydoras in your sig, do you have all these cories? How many cories do you have altogether? Do you happen to have a thread with pics of your corydora collection?

Cheers

i have adolphis or adofls catfish whatever you want to call them and i have lost a lot more of them than i have albinos are the adolfs more or less delicate than the pandas?

I've had my Julii for a couple years and they're pretty hardy except that they're a bit more timid than my bronze catfish. As soon as I get close to the tank they tend to scatter behind rocks and plants. Other than that, they're a joy to watch.

I Love My Pandas, and I also Lost a panda For no Apparent reasons they are Over 2 years old Now when I got the grup of 3, Since I got them I have not been able to successfully add any more. They just Die Off.
I do Like the Green Cory and I must say that Pygmy Cories are the Funniest Cory you could ever own. IF you Get the Chance grab them.
