I don't have a basement to head to in case of a tornado, so I can't really vote on that one. I'd just leave them all where they are, since there'd only be room for the cat and I to take cover in the bathtub (safest place in a basementless house). We'll doubtfully ever have a hurricane bad enough to merit evacuation where I live, so we'd all just stay put... as for flooding, our house is on a hill, so no worries there.

I didn't vote, as the polls were to stringent in their choices...my answer would depend on the situation at hand and the time frame in which I was given to respond.

As bad as it sounds....I'd take my kid, dogs, and cats and the fish would have to fend for themselves. I'd have no where to put them with 2 dogs, 2 cats (pet carrier), a kid, and what belongings/food I could grab and throw in the car.

I know I'm responsible for them, since I brought them home, but I'm more responsible for my kid. The dogs are pretty much self-loading..as they woudl scramble to get in the car as soon as the door opened so they'd be no problem, but if the cats fought going in the pet carrier over a reasonable amount of time (and I was in a real big hurry..say the natural disaster was coming in the next 10-30 minutes) they'd get left too.

I also would not put his safety in jeopardy to save my animals. I can replace them..I can't replace him.

I would, however, not die for any of my animals, that would be fruitless, irresponsible, and selfish of me..considering I have a child (not to mention relatives) that would be left behind without a mother, he also can't replace me.

Although, if I was warned with 1-5 days in advance (like with Katrina) then yeah, of course, all my animals would be evacuated.

I'm also of the group who would worry solely about my kid, husband and dog/rabbit. But, I know that if I was a teen, and my parents were doing the worrying for me- I would fret over the fish as some of you state that you would.

With that said- *if* a tornado was heading directly through my county I would go in the fish room and tighten all of the lids, say a prayer and have faith that they'll be okay. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that even a tornado probably wouldn't kill all of my bettas, there's bound to be a survivor or two sitting in their bowls on my neighbors roof or something. Check the trees! There could be a betta up there! Don't step in the puddles! There could be a betta in there!

Overall, I think I would be absolutely sick over my other fish in the big tanks. Especially the midas :(

I am going to revise my previous statement. My cats would be on my radar, however animals such as cats and dogs seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to earthquakes. I am pretty sure they would try to make it to safety.

Given enough time I would definately evacuate all my animals. Though like I said the only major natural disaster that is likely to hit my area is an earthquake and I know there would be no time to even try to save my fish.

I must say I am really glad I live in an area that is not affected by natural disasters on a regular basis.

heh heh, I actually thought about this after I logged off a while ago, too. I think that if I had a few hours warning and the threat was serious enough (hey in Texas we live under a constant tornado watch it seems) I would probably do something with the bettas. I don't know what, but I'd do something. At least crowd as many as possible,in bowls/jars in the tub or something. I don't know :( Oh, mother nature!

I did not vote as there is no risk of hurricane's and tornado's where I am, and I live on a hill so it wont flood here either. Maybe an earthquake might be relevant.

Suffice is to say that most of us would take our fish to safety given sufficient time, but the fish, no matter how much we care for them, would not be the priority.

There arent many tornados and hurricanes in California. But many earthquakes and some flash floods. If I were in an earthquake, Im not even sure if I have time to get my tanks with me. I would propably take the Birds, Cats, and Rabbit if I had a choice. The fish are just too hard to take with me especially because earthequakes dont have a warning sign like hurricanes do. :/

Yeah, now that i think about it, I think i'd just leave my bettas.
Even when we're on a tornado watch, no one cares unless the sirens blair. Like I siad, you usually have atleast 4mins, and that time for me is spent getting my dog downstairs, cell phone plus cards and a flashlight.
When I'm home alone, I think I'd run to a neighbors
Because, if something did happen to my house, and I was injered and unable to get help, I could die if I was alone.
