What would happen if i change my gravle to sand?

If I put sand in my fish tank and took out the gravle would it take all of what me tank has worked on these past mouthns? is the sand good for fresh wate ror does it only compatable for saltwatertanks? will it heart any algee growing in my tank? or will it afect my plecoustimisis? I would like to changed to sand but i don't know anything about it please help me with any information and if i chouse to get it can i have any tips in putting it in my tank? Please help
