I'm setting up a new 75g  and would love some ideas on what to put in it! I wanted oscars, but they'd need a much bigger tank and I've only got room for a 75g. And although I want to take home discus everytime I visit the lfs, they'd be too high maintenance.

Please give me some ideas!! what would be your dream 75g?

You can keep 1 Oscar in that tank quite happily for life. You wouldn't be able to keep much else with it, but if you really want an Oscar then you can do it!!
you could have Some slightly smaller cichlids like Severums, Blue Acaras, or Jack Dempseys in there. Personally, I'd keep a couple of Green Terrors as they are one fish I've wanted to keep for ages!! :D :D

Me... I would keep a planted tetra tank. Not very many people would do this with a large tank. And I would think it very cool. :D

I know this is the new world cichlid forum. So I am not trying to be abrasive or anything. That is why I said planted tetra tank and not a planted cichlid tank. :alien:

a nice community tank would be very nice.. such as a couple of angels, school of tiger barbs(make sure its more then 6), school of corys, couple of rams.. many other fish u can put with this.. i'm not big on Cichlids..

Well, I like the cichlid/community myself when it comes to new world cichlids, so this was one of my favourate setups in a tank this size:

First the monogomous cichlid couple to own the tank. I love my Nicaraguensis, very charming and unaggressive. Lots of well mannered varieties to choose from though.

Then the open water shoaling fish. I went with congo tetra's, but I rainbow fish would be really nice, if expensive. No lack of fish to fill in for this either. I prefer a large shoal of one type, but a couple of smaller shoals would be nice too.

Every tank needs a bottom dwellers as well. I chose a schoal of Synodontis Multipunctatus because they're a nice size but don't get overly large for a tank like this - and they're really cool.

Then of course a pleco to keep algae down. I like algae growing on the rocks so I chose the Royal pleco - nice fish and it primarily sticks to eating algae off the wood.

Cichlids + Plants= Expensive Vegetables
TRUE , BUT NOT WITH THE DWARF VARIETY

Cuviceps , apistos , nannacara , kribs thomosis ;I love smaller cichlids and big :flex: ones too , just ....someone else can keep em

you could fit an extra pair or 2 of dwarfs , or have more single specimens , and even maybe some other fish  . And plants , plants , plants .

For a long time I've wanted the tank in my sig

Good point. There is acaully alot of cichlid that you can keep plants with. But most of them arnt as common in LFS as oscars, Jack Dempseys, convicts..

I wouldn't bother putting live plants with any cichlids over 4" ,If they don't eat them they'll may end up moving them where they think they belong  .

But artificial plants can be secured a little bit better .

What about angels then?
sorry  I meant cichlids I would ever consider keeping  no offense to Angel keepers

My dream 75 gallon would include 5 clown loaches and discus.(not sure on the number)

lol I have been watching this one all day the only problem is that I don't have a dream tank, as I already have 2 75s in my house and soon a 3rd but what is going in that is a terrible secret, lets just say that it is my dream tank.
