I came across and think it looks amazing, what is it? hard to keep etc?

thats a red tailed catfish . shouldnt really be sold in the general aquatic trade , as its a real tankbuster . you nedd a MASSIVE tank to house these properly .

if you want to see just how big this fish gets check this link and scroll down to the 3rd picture

Lovely fish, but can grow to four feet in length! Add to that the fact that if they can touch both sides of the tank with their whiskers (which are as long as their body) they get terribly stresssed (or so I read somewhere a few years ago), you're looking at a tropical pond with sides of, maybe 15 or 20 feet

I agree with Mark that you shouldn't be able to buy these fish; seriously, who can afford to house one properly?

and if you;ve watched the Zeb Hogan or river monster programmes in Amazon they have caught these fish and they are huge
beautiful fish but you can see from public aquarium displays how much space these guys need

Can anyone name any catfish that can be kept in a 8ft tank with other fish

There are so many that would fall into that category. Personally, I love Synodontis aterrima

But if you have never kept catfish before, I would suggest a bronze cory or something of the like.

I have recenetly purchased one of these. They are redtail catfish, and it will get extremely big.
Mine is about 6 mths. old and is already 7". I plan on a much bigger tank within the next year.
He has two tankmates, which are 3" peacock bass.

Due to the wider, more broad heads of this particular fish I would have to say that it looks like an amazonian red tailed catfish (asian red tailed catfish tend to have narrower heads and more black colouration) and as people have pointed out it will grow up to 1.2 metres in length (4 feet). I have read a considerable deal on the amazonian variety (for I find them more impressive then their asian cousins) and, from what I have read, they will eat you out of house and home -- not a cheap fish to care for. Fun fact about amazonian red tails is they actually enjoy being petted, odd (especially for a fish) but this is what has been reported by owners of amazonian red tails :)

I got my facts from here.

I myself am raising a yellow-bellied catfish, he was 1cm when I got him and has (in seven months) grown to 11cm and one day will reach roughly 1 metre in length.

they have one in the maidenhead aquatics in blackpool and its like a foot and half long in like a 4 foot tank. Quite depressing these should not be kept as pets unless you have a tank the size of a house
